Im confused why everyone talks about the underlying romantic storyline. Im wondering if i missed something? I didnt have the slightest impression of attraction between the two main characters. It seemed like they bonded over shared losses and understood each other, but beyond that there was no sexual tension or anything to indicate any type of romantic relationship. Were there maybe deleted scenes or something that took things in that direction? Help me out here.

You're absolutely right. It wasn't sexual at all. Your interpretation is exactly how I saw it and one of the reasons why I like this movie so much : it's very anti Hollywood in that respect. They didn't cheapen the characters by simply adding an unnecessary romantic sub plot.

Agree. I took it that they both shared a common bond due to their grief.

But it is obvious that penn had a thing for her and she reciprocated. Nothing everything has to be full blown sexual.
