I've always wondered why Silvia almost becomes the assasin after trying to stop the assassination. It goes against everything she's told Tobin. Is it because she was plotting it all along, or did the death of her brother Simon spark fresh grief and anger?

I saw it as triggered by not just her brother but her former lover and friend. I always loved early on how Tobin briefs his team about a potential suicide killer and how there is nothing they share among them except: Either a religious fanatic or someone who has nothing to live for. That latter became Sylvia since the journalist arrived with the horrible news. She is literally alone in her world : her entire family now killed off. Also, she leaves him a voice mail when she escapes from the bathroom window saying "Simon was right...You're right. It takes too long". That's why he finally figured out that she didn't go home then but had been in that room all night. And if you watch closely again, you will see her changing from this idealistic diplomacy advocate to getting angrier and more tired of it towards the end. At one point she's standing with her colleagues fellow interpreters listening to his speech and says 'I can't listen to this anymore' as she walks away with them looking at her surprised.
shareIn the original ending she was the one who staged overhearing the assassination plot... so perhaps thats why?
I think the film would have been better had it played up to Noir themes and made us really question Sylvia and her motives.
