why did they make up an African country

The country that Nicole Kidmans character comes from is called Matoba which is not a real African country, it is completely made up.

Why didn't they use a real African country and considering that Nicole Kidman plays a white African why didn't they make it that she was from South Africa Zimbabwe or Zambia instead.

They probably just didn't want to especially offend very obviously. The country is based off of Zimbabwe, and the dictator off of their horrid president.

reply

Indeed. The situation in Zimbabwe is bad enough without Hollywood sticking its nose in international politics.

You are delusional. The dictator was fictional. The country was fictional. Why would they suddenly attach a real name and country of origin? They could be taken to court for slander. Do you know how pissed off Kazahkstan was after the Borat fiasco? Were you so offended that Middle Earth wasn't called New Zealand?

reply

Because this was fiction--they would have been held to a different standard of facts if they used a really country. If there was a fiction about politics in a US state, yep, they might have to make up a state--or make it nearly impossible to tell which state it was.

reply

because there are no child soldiers in zimbabwe and they wanted to lie about it without being so obvious

Your comment makes no sense.
