Why did Potente get second billing?

Was it in her contract? She was hardly in it.There were only credits at the end, so it couldn't of been to make her death in the opening a surprise

reply

even so someone would findout if she didn't get 2nd billing and may leak out about her being killed off...

also alot of times the credit order is based on who appears on screen first among the main actors/actresses...

reply

Franka Potente was part of the success of Bourne Identity.
Therefore she got 2nd billing in the announcements. The film studio had to do this because otherwise the viewers would have become suspicious that something will happen with Marie they don´t like.
Filming in India and London (underwater scenes) lasted for more than three weeks.
Much more than usual in relation to screen time even in the most expensive films.
It seems the filmmakers had filmed much more but had to shorten Franka´s screen time because of concerns about a possible backlash.

Very illuminating: close attention to all details of the relevant scene!

reply

yea people would suspect something...

what backlash??

isn't her character killed off in the books though or not?

reply

No, she lived in the books and became was Bourne's wife. She was only kidnapped at the beginning of the book.

reply

that sucks, why weren't fans pissed that the movie changed that from the book??

did they have to kill of Potente cuz she didn't want to do the movie or somethign??

reply

I've heard that she didn't want a second one, and I've also heard that they did it so that Julia Stiles could be the leading lady in the third one. I don't know what really happened.

reply

Franka Potente never said that she didn´t want to do more Bourne films.
She complained about her short appearance in Supremacy.
She said Marie is like Lola in Run Lola Run.
If you know the film you hopefully understand.
Her short appearance doesn`t prove the unimportance of her character Marie.
It proves the importance.

reply

yea why wouldn't seh want to do anymore Bourne films??

stupid to want to make Julia Stiles a lead, why?? i like Potente better... who did Stiles sleep with to get that deal??

reply

I much prefer Potente in the films over Julia Stiles, but I think Marie had to die to move the series on. Bourne needed the motivation to hunt down those responsible for Treadstone instead of running and trying to protect Marie. I would have loved Potente to have a bigger part in Supremacy but her character's death was a great twist and added an emotional element to Bourne's actions.

Eat my coolness.

reply

@Alexander_Anderson
Did you read ANY of the books? How can you call it a "great twist"? This movie didn't even bother to try and follow the book. Ludlum was dead by this time; he was a script consultant on The Bourne Identity so they couldn't stray too far from the book. No such restraints with this one. Killing Marie was the biggest mistake possible to make. I can never forgive them for that.

This fan was pissed. I had read all the books years ago, and was expecting Marie to be a major and lasting character.

But I realize we're taking about two different media, and a difference of about 25 years (from the books to the films), so naturally the storyline has to change to fit the times, or to fit whatever the filmmakers think will sell.

I still wish she hadn't been killed off, though.

Christ, I miss the cold war.

reply

@champ25
The fans WERE pissed; you can bet your ass this one was, anyway. How COULD they?!? And it's far worse if it's true that they did it to make room for that Stiles thing. Franka Potente rules. She was perfect opposite Matt Damon. Killing her off was a stupid casting decision. Stupid, Stupid, Stupid, Stupid.

reply

this issue concerning Maries killing is quite though....

When I saw supremacy for the first time in the movies I was super-pissed that she got killed in the beginning. But after re-watching all three movies recently it just made a lot of sense that she would get killed and be therefore Jasons driving force. The following Bourne movies couldn't have been the same with Jason constantly worrying about Marie. But I am seriously interested in the fact that she got to be Jasons wife in the book. Mhm, can't really imagine Bourne ever being at rest with someone.

Next thing: I don't think that they killed Franka's character to make way for Julia's. It just doesn't make sense. It just served the story of supremacy... my opinion.

reply

Apparently Potente was signed up for Supremacy before Identity was even finnished.

At the time Damon was well known for his hatred of doing sequals, but the studio knew that if they could get as much of the original cast together, hopefully that would get him on.

Damon and Potente became good friends during filming, and rumors are the studio told her she was get a big part in the next movie, as long as Damon was in it.

Anyway, between the end of Identity and the script for Supremacy being finnished, her part is cut short, but she was already signed on for the movie, so nothing she can do.

That is why she does not like talking about this movie (also for Identity she was told she needed to loose ALOT of weight for the part, and that p*ssed her off alot), as her hopes where that this would be the movie that got her into the big time in America... after Supremacy, she faded out of Hollywood and back working in Germany now (with occasional tv roles)

reply

Well, I would watch more of her. She was great in both these movies, and she and Damon had great chemistry.

reply

The fans that could have been pissed by such dramatic changes have already been pissed by first movie, so there is no point in trying to placate them in the second one :-)

I don't know, but I wondered about that, too. I dig your .html spoiler tag!

Three movies with Bourne worrying about Marie would of been a drag. Obviously he works better alone. The change was good, keeps the pace of the story going and developing. And I thought Stiles was great in Ultimatum.

reply

Personally I preferred removing her. He has to put his faith in someone other then his lover. He has to put his faith in people he barely knows. Most importantly I'm glad they didn't give him a new love interest in the form of Stiles. He gets reminded but that's it. Also they never make the viewer forget about her either.

reply

why couldn't he have just left her at the coffee shop in Greece? he didn't need to go back there, he could have finished up his adventure and then went to go get her

reply

I do suspect it was done to hide her early death, that is assuming she got second billing on the posters and in the trailers too, which I don't remember.

reply

Julia Stiles is hot but she absolutely cannot act. She even sucked in the first movie, every line she said sounded so fake. Potente is actually a good actress

reply

I also liked it that the main female love interest was not from the USA.

In the original script, Marie was supose to be a Canadian backpacker with green hair traveling round Europe.... but then was turned to Swiss to get round the Embassy part of teh story, and after they saw her in Run Lola Run, Marie was changed to German and the character was based round Franka and her part in Run Lola Run.
