Some of the characters kind of look like them, don't they? Not Runt or Abby, but many of the others. (Shirt Tales and Critter Sitters were lines of cute animals that were popular in the '80s. I had some folders with Critter Sitters on them, and I picked up some Shirt Tales magnets at a yard sale not long ago.)

Critter Sitters were actually a little bit cuter than Shirt Tales, IMHO, although I don't think they were as well known.
As far as "Chicken Little" comparisons, let's just say: Critter Sitters + attitude = Morkubine. For that matter, Chicken Little and many of the players on the baseball teams sort of have that Critter Sitter look to them also. I don't remember if Critter Sitters had a porcupine, although I'd be willing to bet they did. I remember a koala (now THERE'S a cute idea for a fanfic character!). When I was in college, I had a Critter Sitters folder with a koala leaning up against a stack of school books, and the words "Ah, Friday!" :)
I will look for some Critter Sitters pictures online and point you to them, so you can see what they look like. Shirt Tales had their own TV show, although I never saw it.

OK, I did find a few things. Critter Sitters were from Hallmark. There are some stickers of them on ebay. There are tons of things labeled "Critter Sitters", though (there was a cartoon by that name, but it wasn't them). So you may have to look for a while to find the right ones.
