Chris Stuckmann explains Stay

Stuckmann made a pretty easy to follow analysis and explanation of the movie for those having a difficult time understanding certain things:

I must admit, I don't understand why this movie needed an explanation video. I saw a bit of Chris's video but didn't watch the entire long. IMO, the movie was pretty clear. I maintain that this movie was like a long Twilight Zone episode. It was okay.

This movie is brilliant and beautiful like Lost and not like the shallow cgi fest Inception. Thank you Chris Stuckmann for introducing me to this movie I have never heard of and now it's one of my all time favorites.

shallow?

It's a high budget bad movie that is high on the visuals and throws in a ambiguous ending to get people talking. It's also disguised by Leo's acting and Nolan's directing but down to its core it's shallow on actual substance. Stay is a movie that has thought through everything down to the smallest detail and I appreciate that.

You are trying to make Stay into something it's not; a complex movie. It's not complex but quite easy to understand although Inception is quite a complex movie which requires multiple viewings to fully understand. I'm not ripping on Stay, i thought it was an average movie but it does seem like anti climactic when you find out that it was all just a hallucination of someone close to dying.

Further, i don't even know why you are comparing both films? Is it because both feature dreams?

reply

I agree with you. If anything Stay is a more shallow film.

I wouldn't have seen this if not for Chris. Which would be a shame, because this movie is fantastic.

How the hell are we not seeing transition shots like this more often?

This movie failed at the box-office, partly because it got destroyed by critics who didn't understand it. That's probably why you won't see other movies attempting risky transitions like that very often.

'Enter The Void' had similar transition shots, however it was also very polarizing within the critics and audience alike. In my opinion I hated 'Enter the Void' but I did enjoy 'Stay'. 'Stay' is an underappreciated gem!

The trippy visuals and symbolism, weird editing choices were not invented by this film. So defending it by saying 'critics don't get it, they weren't prepared for it back then' is nonsensical. Way more trippy and difficult, complex movies have been released 40-50 years ago, and the critics loved them.

I also saw this movie today based on Chris's review of it. I am so glad I did because I loved. It was sad and beautiful at the same time and the acting was top notch especially from Ryan. I just might not pick up on what a movie is really about all the time so I was really glad for his analysis of it. It made it a lot more emotional for me than it already was.
