What's it with American movies and Ficus plants?

In both FWD&J and 'the Savages' the main characters are carrying potted Ficus plants and in '40 yo virgin one of the characters mentions Ficus.

Fake ficus plants are a mainstay in American corporate office decor. That's about it!

Wow, 3 whole movies? That's crazy.
I dont know. Its a living thing that's there to witness how much of an ass your boss is, what's not to like about a ficus?
