There's a great message in this movie with Yancy and Peter

I saw this movie on Friday at the preview and I was actually impressed. I mean it had some of the normal teen movie crap, but there really was a message with the two characters Yancy and Peter, played by Kallie Flinn Childress and Ryan Slattery. Yancy is sometimes made fun of and nobody has ever asked her out. Then Peter comes in and they have this really incredible scene where he is so nice to her and makes her feel really wanted. When I was watching it I felt such a part of the scene. Some of the acting in Sleepover wasn't so great but these two really had me quite emotional. Plus it was such a great message telling people that what is important is what's on the inside, and not the outside.

Anyway, my two cents... You really should watch this movie!

Are you out of your mind?!?

It sends a terrible message to "fat" girls!!!The dude is way too old for her...and he seems major wierd. As someone mentioned on another thread, hes like some psycho peadophile!!!

Anyways, going back to the topic, basically the message that they're sending out is that the fat, unpopular girl will never get the "hot" guy, all she gets is the chubby dude with a thing for brownies...and because she's fat and unpopular, she's happy with whatever she gets.

Now, if she had gotten someone goodlooking who liked her for herself, that would have been a message!!!

I totally agree with you saaretjie...no one deserves a 35 year old peadophile!

YOU GUYS ARE ALL STERIOTYPICAL *beep* So what if yancy's a little chubby, I thought she was pretty. Every one is not meant to be a size 2. And besides Its just a movie!

yea i thought peter was WAAAYYY too old for her, soo i cant really agree with ya there..

And that "great message" is that fat girls are only liked by fat guys who love brownies too.

It would have made more sense and had a better message if Yancey hooked up with Gregg or one of Steve's other friends in the end.

THAT WAS MY POINT!!! I WAS SAYING THAT THATS THE MESSAGE THE FILMS GETTING ACROSS!

Why does everyone think he's too old for her? to me it seemed that he was maybe a year older and that was his part time job moving speakers, but that he was still at school. That's what all of my friends & my little sister have thought too.

reply

I thought he was a high schooler too. Anyway, it was weird she couldn't get a hot guy too. But the story was sweet.

reply

Yes, especially in Hollywood where they use older actors as teenager characters.
Those who are talking about he was a guy in his 30s
they're just showing their own social phobias, paranoias and bigotry.
As for you, I thought he just was a high-schooler in a part time job.

It wasn't a message, it was a sub-plot intended to pad the story. The writer at one point said "Let's give the fat girl a resolution to her sub-plot", funny thing is her character was so degrading and stereotypical, there was no need for her in the movie.

At first I thought the "find someone who prefers twinkies to sellery" message was misinterpreted. It -could-, potentially, mean to find someone who prefers joy of life and personality to a stereotypical image of how girls should look. Someone who would prefer her -because- she ate the twinkies she liked rather than misery munching of sellery. That, in my opinion, would have been a great message.

However, the choice of guy for her messed that up. It twisted the message to being "only overweight guys will ever pick an overweight girl". The guy is nice looking in my opinion, and seems nice enough. He just completely isn't right in that situation.

Don't think he looks or is too old for her though.

Bad message in a bad flick. Definitely wouldn't pick this one for any young teen audience.

Their Brownies and Celery analogy was idiotic. Celery isn't particularly pleasant in the short term, but in the long run, celery, or rather, a healthy diet, which they were alluding to, makes you live longer and look better. Brownies, on the other hand, are instant gratification. People who eat brownies aren't concerned with getting a heart attack at age 40, they aren't concerned with being able to run a mile, they're concerned with eating brownies and enjoying it, right then and there. The counterpart to brownies, in teen-society, is the vacuous hot girl who puts out. There's no long term relationship, there's no emotional satisfaction, there's no need for maturity in the relationship, but it's immediate pleasure. Fat chicks, who are less attractive and hence less immediately pleasurable (unless you're, you know, into that sort of thing), are the celery of teen society, at least assuming that they're a good person on the inside.

I basically agree with the original poster!!!

I think that the point of the story line was that she felt really good b/c a boy even paid attention to her!!! And so the boy was chubby...so what? He was a cutie too!!! And the point is he thought she was beautiful enough to walk up to her and talk to her! And if you disagree about his looks, well I understand...but the truth is that almost all high school aged guys who are "hot" are jerks and would never be interested in a girl who has any extra weight!!!!

And I don't think he's too old for her! I think he's probably the same age as Steve...and he ended up with Julie!!! So what's the big deal?

I think the only reason it seemed weird is b/c the girl looked so young!

But I liked the message of even chubby girls have guys who like them!!!!

What?! It was appalling! It looked like they were trying to give out a great message about Yancy, but it didn't work.

Firstly, they implied that even at the tender age of 14 you need a boy to like you to make you feel happy and complete. They didn't even have her character be happy with herself by herself, she could only like herself when a random boy did first.

Secondly, the boy (who may have been quite a lot older than her) was fat also, it was quite clear that he was the only boy who ever liked her. The film made it seem like as an overweight girl only an overweight guy would like her, and she would be happy because nobody else ever had, and of course, the whole point of her life was to get a guy to like her.

She didn't know him or anything about him, they had nothing in common at all. The film also shows that when a guy you don't know pays you attention, because it's the first time it's ever happened to you then you must straight away slow dance with him. When they were talking about brownies it also implied that so far their relationship was based on their mutual weights.

It was an appalling subplot. And a crappy film though, so I guess nobody cares.
