This movie is a complete load of "enchanting" unrealistic crap. I get a wild kick out of bad movies and this one takes the cake for 2004. First of all the fat girl who they had to name "Yancy" to match her unattractive character (Kallie Flynn Childress), is not featured on the cover of the box because somehow American 14 year old girls won't relate with other chubby girls? Plus when they sneak into the club while fatty waits outside, she's approached by a sweet heavy set charmer who is working on a gig there that night. Clearly in order for him to work in a bar, he has to be at least 21, which is of course is a perfectly acceptable age to hit on a 14 YEAR OLD GIRL! And while Joe Nussbaum is advocating pedophilia, why not condone the high school senior to fall in like with Julie (Alexa Vega), before she even attends his school. I remember in MY high school, only the coolest and most popular guys would court girls 4 years younger than them, as apposed to dating attractive mature girls their own age. Why stop at middle school Steve Faris when there is plenty of kindergarten girls with your headshot tacked above they're bed surrounded by glittered hearts? If you're ready to play your home version of Mystery Science Theater 3K I HIGHLY recommend "Sleepover".
> the fat girl who they had to name "Yancy" to match her unattractive character
I thought she was rather sweet. A little chubby, yes. But there's nothing wrong with that.
> while fatty waits outside, she's approached by a sweet heavy set charmer who > is working on a gig there that night. Clearly in order for him to work in a > bar, he has to be at least 21
He's not working in the bar. He's helping out with the speakers, or whatever it was. He doesn't have to be 21, or even 18.
> And while Joe Nussbaum is advocating pedophilia
What the *beep* does any of this have to do with pedophilia?? I strongly suggest you look that term up in a dictionary, before throwing around such accusations.
> the high school senior to fall in like with Julie (Alexa Vega), before she > even attends his school.
Soooo?
> I remember in MY high school
I know it must be difficult, but try to imagine this: This movie wasn't about YOUR high school...
"sweet" is a term you use to describe somebody unnattractive without hurting their feelings. clearly you prefer brownies over celery
the high school senior to fall in like with Julie (Alexa Vega), before she > even attends his school.
Soooo?
SOOOOO just cause you were one of those guys doesn't make it normal. thats stagitory rape bud. and while you were buying Newports for your 8th grade A-cup, other guys were clumsily hitting 3rd base with girls who were at least their own age.
>>>>SOOOOO just cause you were one of those guys doesn't make it normal. thats stagitory rape bud.
It never says in the movie how old Steve is so why do you assume he's a senior AND 18? The only reason Julie cared about the fountain in the first place is because Steve eats there, so why would she go through ALL of that trouble to sit somewhere he won't even be? Also, Hannah even says "If we win, you could be sitting right next to him at the fountain" so he'll obviously be there the next year, and ummmm SENIORS GRADUATE AND LEAVE HIGH SCHOOL...
You think too much about movies. In some movies it's understandable but honestly this movie wasn't made to be realistic or anything. It's supposed to be a fun movie for girls to watch at their own sleepovers and just have fun with. Sheesh!
Also, Yancy probably wasn't on the cover since she wasn't meant to be at the sleepover in the first place!
Yah I'm 20 and found this movie way suggestive! What teenage girl would ever sniff a guys shoe, no matter how hot he is! Thats way to freaky for a kids movie! It's nuts theres tons of other stuff to but I saw this soo long ago!
ur a jerk! U cannot say fatty, that is so rude! Please, now I kinda agree on the age thing. But it's not forever, it's only a movie. The kindergarten thing is wrong. It was JUNIOR HIGH, they had FINISHED. It was not middle school. Big big difference. And that's not true, my friend liked a senior and he liked her, a freshman. Actually, prolly 18 u can start at 18 and bartend so get some facts first!
Holy effing sh!t. That was too funny! "Plus when they sneak into the club while fatty waits outside..." It was totally mean and insensitive...funniest thing about your rant. I know some people are hating on your humor, but isn't humor just another word for schadenfreude? Taking pleasure in other people's pain?
I agree that Sean Faris is too old for Alexa Vega in the movie. Let's say that at the very least he's around 16, since he was driving, so that would make him a sophomore/junior. Way too old to be hitting on someone that isn't in high school yet. She just graduated from 8th grade, so that would make her 14 at the most. I would say that they are at least two years apart in the movie. I think I remember him saying that he remembered her from middle school, so they can't be too far apart in age. Still it's squick. Maybe if they were in college then that age difference isn't as noticeable, but when they are just hitting puberty a year apart is like a generation gap. Though I can't totally bust on a movie that would have Sean Faris naked. Oh did I envy Alexa Vega for being able to see his nude hotness!
I do think that Yancy is pretty. Chubby does not equal unattractive. At least to me it doesn't. She had really nice skin, pretty eyes, good hair, and nice lips. All of those features equals pretty. I know that I laughed at your fatty comment but it's more about the way you wrote it. The movie people did leave her off the cover and they did make her wait outside. It's a funny observation. Cruel and mean, but funny.

I'd just like to know where that 'just hitting puberty' thing came from. She's 14...girls usually hit puberty at 9 or 10. Yeah, um, that's 4 or 5 years. I don't think that counts as 'just hitting puberty.' Also, what's wrong with a 14 year old dating a 16 year old? They're TWO YEARS APART! Most couples are two years apart--it's actually the average. So that would kind of make them normal, not weird. There are a lot of 2-year-apart couples at my school. Now, if they were 13 and 17 that would be too far apart. But I would assume that they are no more than two grades apart since he remembers her. And freshmen dating juniors is really common, so I don't see what the big deal is.
I do agree that there is a mixed message between Julie kissing Steve, whom she barely knows, when the popular girl wouldn't kiss her boyfriend, but remember: Steve wasn't trying to get Julie to hook up with him. The other guy was just a jerk.
If you actually read my message then you'd notice that I did say a year apart in high school is pretty noticeable. I mean personality wise and maturity level. Freshmen and Juniors are a lot different. If you don't see what could possibly be wrong with a 14 year old with a 16 year old, you yourself are probably only 14. In case you didn't know, adolescents go through a lot of growing during their years in high school. Once you become a junior you will definitely notice the differences between yourself and a freshmen. At least in my experience there have been several. Maybe you go to a magical movie-like high school where all grades are indiscriminant. Also her age is the maximum expected for a girl "graduating" junior high. She could be 13 for all we know, does that make it any worse? A three year age difference?
As with puberty, it doesn't happen all at once. So yeah umm...she's still developing and in the early stages of puberty. She won't stop growing till she's 18. So she still has about four or five years to go. Granted she looks somewhat developed, but in real life she was 16 when she did the movie. Also your average is WRONG. Last I read the average age for the onset of puberty in a girl was about 12. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puberty

Seventeen, actually, and I know people at school that date people one or two years younger. Is there anything wrong with a junior dating a college freshman? That's two years, and they're in different schools, not just grades. But plenty of people do that, too. Hardly anyone dates people in their own grade--probably because they've known them forever and remember their annoying or awkward elementary school years.

I've already finished my junior year, and while I personally wouldn't date a freshman, I know plenty of people who did. Usually they're the somewhat more mature freshman, but they are still freshman. For all we know, maybe she's fifteen. Maybe her birthday is in September, so she's a bit older. Does that make it any better? A one year age difference?

Last I read the average age for the onset of puberty in a girl was about 12." Well, I'm not going from reading, I'm going from experience. By fifth grade (10 or 11 years old) over half of the girls in my grade had started puberty, and by sixth nearly everone had. Some girls began in third or fourth grade. That would make the average age, here at least, about ten. (Fifth grade, of course, being the year when guys realize the can snap girls' bras.) And of course it doesn't happen all at once, but most girls are pretty close to done growing by the age of sixteen. It is possible to continue growing until the age of twenty-one or so, but I know most girls won't grow too much more after they're sophomore or junior years of high school.
But you're right, everyone is different.
However, as for the title of the thread, ignoring the technicalities in age, you have to have sex with them to be a pedophile. I don't know about your state, but in mine the statutory rape law is under 16, 4 year age difference. So 14 and 18 would be illegal, but 14 and 17 would not. Since we assume she's 13 or 14 and he's 16 or 17, it would completely legal.
Morally or socially acceptable is completely different matter.
When you consider the age and popularity together, though, it does seem a little less realistic. He is, after all, popular; she might become popular, but up until that point was pretty unpopular. If you add the age difference, it does seem a little odd that a popular junior would date an unpopular freshman.
“Is there anything wrong with a junior dating a college freshman? That's two years, and they're in different schools, not just grades. But plenty of people do that, too. Hardly anyone dates people in their own grade--probably because they've known them forever and remember their annoying or awkward elementary school years.”
Just because people do, does not mean they should. Like I have stated before a year can be a very noticeable difference, particularly if one of them if embarking on such a momentous change in their life. College is really different than high school. Just as high school really different than middle school. As for the “Hardly anyone dates people in their own grade…” I think you are making a too general statement with no substance to back it up besides your own high school experience, which may or may not be a typical American experience. You might have gone to a private school or a really small school in the middle of nowhere. Either way it is not pertinent to the discussion.
“For all we know, maybe she's fifteen. Maybe her birthday is in September, so she's a bit older. Does that make it any better? A one year age difference?”
Yes I do believe it is better. Fifteen and 16 is a better age match than 13 and 16. I have stated why in earlier posts. In the movie one girl was at least 15 and driving. None of the main girls were able to drive a real car so I assume that they were all the “typical” age for their grade, so 13 or 14 it is.
“Well, I'm not going from reading, I'm going from experience. By fifth grade (10 or 11 years old) over half of the girls in my grade had started puberty, and by sixth nearly everone had. Some girls began in third or fourth grade. That would make the average age, here at least, about ten.”
Once again you are going by your own experience which makes your “data” bias and there is no way you could really know when anyone started puberty unless they relinquished the exact date they started menses and even then it is not the precise date they may have started puberty. The “official” start of puberty is when a girl becomes able to reproduce aka bear children, as in the day she produces an egg. Since there are no reliable outward signs of ovulation, most people regard menstruation as the starting point. Also puberty does not equal maturity. Just because one is physically “mature” does not mean they are ready to have a relationship with someone older.
”However, as for the title of the thread, ignoring the technicalities in age, you have to have sex with them to be a pedophile. An adult does not have to have sex with a pre-pubescent child in order to be considered a pedophile. Look up definitions before you make such bold statements. They just have to have a sexual inclination, partly or exclusively, towards pre-pubescent children. Statutory rape laws are for splitting hairs. They are to determine whether an adult has had consensual sex with a minor that is or is not “competent enough to consent to sex.” Statutory rape laws are different from state to state. The minimum for most is 16. So legally she cannot give consent for sex and if Sean Faris’s character was 17 then I would still be careful because he could be tried as an adult if her parents choose to press charges. Despite all that, just because one can does not mean one should.
The popularity issue is a good point. One could argue that popularity is an unfair advantage which could sway Alexa Vega’s character into doing something she is not ready for, but say Sean Faris’s character is.
“Odd, yes, but not perverse”
Odd and perverse could be said to be synonyms. Odd is something that is not ordinary, while perverse is something that goes against what is normal. Perverse does not always have to mean something sexual. It could just be something deviant to what is considered normal. Odd and perverse could both be defined as something abnormal.
"Just because people do, does not mean they should." Very true.
"The “official” start of puberty is when a girl becomes able to reproduce aka bear children, as in the day she produces an egg." Official, but it's generally marked as the point where sex hormones are first released and development first occurs, which is actually about two years earlier. But you're right, physically and emotionally mature are two completely different things.
"Odd and perverse could be said to be synonyms." Fine, how about odd but not sick? Is that better?
I'm not trying to validate or rationalize the relationship, just pointing out that calling it pedophilic is exaggerating to say the least.
However, considering how easily she was convinced to do the scavenger hunt, I think it's safe to say that he could easily get her to go farther than she wants to, since she really doesn't seem to be a very strong-willed person. Whether he does or not, we don't know, because the movie ends before they really have a true 'relationship.'
16 is still a minor. What's next, are they going to force seniors to go to school in a different building just to get them away from minors? I know in real life, tbe actors are too old, but their CHARACTERS are not. Why is everything so politically correct these days? It seems people are regressing to puritians.
"Why stop at middle school Steve Faris when there is plenty of kindergarten girls with your headshot tacked above they're bed surrounded by glittered hearts? "
I am completely with you on this. The whole time I was watching this I was like, "Aren't these college students?” especially the brownie sound guy who looked 26.
Of course not that many people who like this movie will care (and talk smack at you for your fatty comment), because they may be the following... 1. A complete spaz 2. A tween 3. Just a tool for money from Hollywood 4. Me (yes me) 5. A pedophile
Well I don't think Steve Faris is a senior in this movie cuz if he was he would be graduating, thus ruining the plot of the movie (to get the senior spot. In the end this was a "cute" movie, merely to give me something to watch instead of studying and yeah the storyline is pretty... odd, but its a movie geered (sp) for kids and younger teens I think.
