In the scene where Clarisse is comforting Mia about not marrying Andrew and Joe comes out to protect them both. Do you think that Joe actually hears Clarisse's bit about losing the only man she ever loved or not?

I don't think so. He was close enough to jump over and protect them if necessary but he was also far enough away to allow them a private conversation. Otherwise he would not have acted all surprised when Clarisse proposed to him in the church.

I doubt he did. He's protective of both Clarisse and Mia but he also knows when he needs to keep his distance. Clearly he loves them both very much and he's the kind of guy who would understand when they need a little girl time.
Also like Lu-21 said he wouldn't have been so surprised when Clarisse proposed to him either.
I kinda think he did hear. He'd never acknowledge it, of course.
The surprise when Clarisse proposes really strikes me more as "Now? Not that I'm not going to jump at the chance, but now? All loud & public & in the midst of this groundbreaking day?"
Everybody's got to pay the rent.
