Why did Nic Cage's dad, Jon Voight, keep saying...

... "this clue will lead to this clue, and that clue will lead to another", etc, etc, "it's a complete waste of time", bla, bla... When in fact he himself, and every previous generation of the Nic Cage family had solved the grand total of ZERO clues?

We know this is the case because Nic Cage cracks the Charlotte clue, which is the very first clue we see given in the old flashback at the start.

Had Jon Voight gone barking mad?

I just assumed they had gone through many previous clues and had gotten up to the Charlotte clue when they decided that the Charlotte clue was just another in a long line of clues that would ultimately lead nowhere.

They couldn't have gotten through previous clues, because the Charlotte was the very first clue given by Charles Carroll to Thomas Gates. OP has a good point.
