Well, kind of, but not really. In the end, you see a small boy being put into bed by his parents. He fell asleep in his room, while listening to the discovery album. So, it looks like he dreamt all of this.
However, he has some action figures all over his room, representing pretty much all characters from the movie. So, if this didn't happen in reality, how could there be merchandising stuff about it?

Maybe I got something wrong now, but that's now I understand it! And yes, it is animated, too.

I thought that the action figures could have been generic toys.

If you think about it, he was listening to Daft Punk's Discovery album which has one more time on it. If it was not a dream he would have been listening to the album by the crescentdolls.

I think the kid acted the story out with the action figures do the album.

that's what i thought too. you see that the end a vinyl version of "Discovery" was being played. wouldn't that mean the kid would have to change discs and different sides of the vinyl? i think basically he was just playing with the toys while the album was being played, but then ended up falling asleep and dreamed the rest while "Too Long" was playing.

but maybe you the viewers have to interpret the ending your own.

I'm pretty sure the entire thing was a dream. Remember what Leiji Matsumoto stated in the beginning of the movie? He pretty much said when he was a child he had a dream or hope. He explains that his dream consisted of lights flashing in his head. Then the movie starts.

The part I liked the best about the ending is that the Shep doll (the guy who died) and the Stella doll (which were set next to the sleeping boy) are holding hands. Perhaps in his next dream they will be together.

I love this movie.
