Baryl Doing a Cameo Cosplay?

I just watched this full for the first time and for some crazy reason something sparked in my head:

During the scene where Stella is "accepting" the award, Baryl, the drummer, defuses her shade/head piece thing. When they both run away, you can see Baryl is wearing some odd get up. Now it's been maybe ten years since I've seen it, but the cloak and hat he's dressed in remind me of the main character from Galaxy Express 999. Is my repressed memory correct, or am I just crazy?

Interesting, ...

I looked up Galaxy Express 999 and there seem to be a number of similarities in style and maybe even a few homages to this TV series of the late 70's.
* The Girl and the kid look almost identical.
* The ramp from which they are launched back into space is just like that in the title sequence of the TV series.
* The name "Interstella 5555" is very similar to "Galaxy ... 999".

Further investigation (that everyone probably knows already) proved that this is no coincidence as one name does turn up in both; Leiji Matsumoto is the Original Creator of Galaxy Express 999 and also Visual Supervisor for Insterstella 5555.
It seems it was directly styled on the tv series.

So its seems you were right.

Well Daft Punk are fans of Leiji Matsumoto which is why they got him and Toei Animation to do it. So yeah, they are supposed to be similar.
