Similar Musical Animation Movies?

And Anime, as well. Are there any other animated movies that are musicals. specially modern music?

reply

well, there is The Wall, from Pink Floyd. Not really animated though.

The music in it isn't "modern" (more Disney romance/lightness than anything else--okay there's one sorta doom/dark-ish villain song, but it's just vocalizing, no lyrics), and there's more instrumental and flute than songs with words, but the Playstation game Lunar: The Silver Star Story is one of the best-written anime-type projects I've seen/played and the vocal talent is strong too (both voice acting and singing-wise).

Rock & Rule should not be missed. You'll get your modern music there (well, `70s and `80s stuff). Targeted at older kids/teens, I'd consider this Canadian production to be a rock musical of a cartoon.

Kris, I have this game. I love RPGs, like Xenogears, Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Suikoden... But for some reason, I just couldn't get into it. Maybe because it seemed to be a lot harder than those others I mentioned, maybe because of the graphics. But I knew I had to play it sometime because so many people said this was an awesome game.

So thanks for reminding me. =)

I'll check out Rock & Rule, seems interesting.

Any others?

Those are some of my favorite Super Nintendo and Playstation games as well. Actually Chrono Trigger might be my absolute favorite SNES game, whereas Xenogears is at least in my Top 5 favorite PSone titles. FF6 and a couple of the other games in that series are up there too. Never got around to playing Suikoden, might still some day.

Lunar isn't that hard for the most part, but I think some of your frustration may have been because the characters start off very weak and, because it's the kind of RPG where the monsters and bosses level up along with your characters (so as to provide a challenge--I know this is common in some RPGs, but not all), there's not really any easy way to work around it by leveling up a ton and then kicking the game's ass with ease. More than anything, it all had to do with how you worked out a strategy with your characters, your large use of magic, and of course whatever weapons and armor you got a hold of by finding or buying (sometimes really expensive and silver wasn't exactly plentiful unless you enjoyed fighting a lot. Me, I'm more of a "get from point A to point B" kinda gamer these days, much as I enjoy the odd side quest if it's worthwhile, but I just don't have time to find everything in a game anymore and I have even less patience for unnecessary menu battles). Also, some of the boss battles in the game are a bitch. The graphics were only polished 16-bit style Super Nintendo graphics (and the character sprites were way too short/stunted), so yeah, they were pretty basic, but once in a while I still don't mind playing games with outdated looks. It's worth playing through for the story, the humor, it's really one of the best translations out there (as opposed to all the very horrible or just plain mediocre Japanese to Enlgish game scripts). Some of the cut scenes are great too. It is, admittedly, kinda cutesy and childish in some ways, but the characters, the made-up religious themes and some of the moral dilemmas kept things interesting.

Any others ? Well, I mean you can pick out tons of Disney musicals and other aimed-at-kids non-Disney musical films (doesn't mean they're not worth seeing, just saying, there're a lot of animated musicals for kids, some featuring music that's "modern" in sound, some not). Beyond that, there aren't a whole lot of adult or "alternative" animated musicals.

I'm not an expert in anime, but the mini-series (can also be found as a shortened film version) Macross Plus was pretty good and featured a variety of different songs (mostly beats/dance/weird techno-type stuff, I guess). It takes place in the Robotech universe, I believe, a series I know very little about.

I've heard good things about the French animated film The Tripplettes of Bellville, but haven't gotten around to watching it yet.

When you say you're specifically looking for animated films with "modern music", are you looking for a particular genre ? Rock ? Classical-type stuff ? Folk ? The kind of music you'd hear in plays on stage ? (that's pretty much in the Disney vein). Do you want teen and adult-aimed animation, or can it be children's stuff too as long as it's good ?

Speed Racer is a retelling of Interstella 5555. Seriously. Same basic storyline, almost exact same villain (notice the logo and the clothes).

The Wachowskis being the huge anime nerds that they are must have been really influenced by Interstella 5555.

Oh, and Speed Racer is a great movie anyway. Check it out. ;)

Interesting. There are so few albums that try to tell a story, let alone one that has animation along with it. It's like this is a soundtrack and a regular album at once.

It's not my favorite, but Xanadu is the closest I can think of. Weird collaboration, standalone album, even some animation.

There are many animated movies with soundtracks but I can't think of any that were musicals. It was a animated tv special called The Point from a while ago. That's kind of close.

Fantasia is close but it doesn't tell one story.

hmmm.....
