I really wish M. Night had gone a different route with the "twists' of this movie. I think the modern day setting was good and dandy, I would have kept that in BUT, here is what I would have tweaked ...
When Ivy is making her way to get the medicine and is attacked by "The Monster" (Noah) , it would have been soooo much better if it wasn't actually Noah, but a REAL Monster/Creature.
It might have been a bigger surprise, but it would have undermined or at least weakened a very important point of the movie. Namely that the Elders made up something that is worse than reality in order to protect their families from the real dangers by keeping them in fear with false dangers.
The problem with that is it raises even more questions. If they would have covered more of the plot holes up that would have fixed this film as it is its not bad but all right I like it but dont love it.My twist would be that when she gets to town we find out not only is it modern day but the end of the world has happened an theres buildings an cars in places with signs of a war showing the elders were mostly right in leaving before things got worse an she simply found the medicine in a spot the father told her about lol

lol That wouldn't have been a Twist....that would have just been the natural Progression of the story....
From the start of the movie all the way through, we are lead to believe the creature are in fact real monsters....lol Had Ivy been attacked By The real Monster/creature, No one would have seen that as a twist, It would have just been seen as where the story was heading...
lol the entire narrative through out the movie was that the creature were real....In order for their to be A "Twist" something Unforeseen has to happen, something unexpected has to happen, A Plot point has to be flipped....Revealing that The creatures weren't real after spending the entire movie believing the were is A TWIST...
what you should have said was "A Better Ending" would be for the creatures to be real...
Having the creatures of turned out to be real may have been a better ending....But It LITERALLY could not have been a Twist...
It's been a long time since I saw this film, but it seems like I remember they got the idea for the monsters from local Pennsylvania legends. I don't remember them saying the monsters were ever real. I don't believe the elders ever thought the monsters were real, it was all a ruse to protect the society as a whole.
It's been a long time since I saw it and then only once on television. It made a big impression on me, though. I thought it was good. I realize taste is subjective, and mine may all be in my mouth.
I thought the same thing when I saw it for the first time, and I was expecting it to be M. Knight Shamalongadingdong's park ranger character himself. It would have worked as it would have ended the story on a scary note that no matter how much money and resources you surround yourself with, the great "evil" you are trying so hard to avoid will find its way back to you. Instead, MKS gives the movie a sorta cheap payoff.
It would have been better if the monsters were real and the story was never brought into present times. Everybody saw the "twist" coming a mile away and it's just dumb. The real twist would be, everyone is expecting a ridiculous plot twist from MNight and instead he just gives them an interesting horror story.
when i saw the movie in theaters, i thought the REAL twist would be that the "modern day" stuff with the park rangers was another past simulation, and if she kept walking further into the thicket she would've entered a distant future like Back To The Future Pt 2. that would've been hysterical.
