The Widow Meryl (spoiler)

Does anyone else think she had her husband killed twenty years ago? She apparently didn't think much of him, and maybe he was in the way of her plans for Shaw. They only said he had died, but I suspect her.

What do you guys think?

When I saw the movie again the same thought occurred to me. In the book she doesn't kill her husband but her leaving him for Raymond's stepfather (who obviously wasn't written into this movie) is supposedly the reason for his eventual decline and death.

I think the Manchurian company either got him killed after they tried to brainwash him but it didn't work so well on him, or he died accidentally and Meryl Streep gave them her son instead of husband to take on the role of brainwashed president.

I haven't read the book, but from this movie alone yes I also thought she probably killed her husband.

Same here, I haven't read the book either but I thought the same. She's capable of pretty much anything, she was a pretty vile character.

At some point, before the election I believe, Elenore mentions something about Raymond's father "spoiling" or "ruining" his chances at being president.

Which led me to believe that originally Elenore intended to reach the White House on her husband's merits, but some scandal or bad decision made him ineligible as a presidential candidate. That would be when Elenore started plotting to use Raymond.

The death of Elenore's husband may not have been at her orders, or it might. I certainly don't believe one would thrive in Elenore's company after failing her.
