Why did the Soviets want the Alien Corpse at the beginning of the movie?

It's been a while since I watched it, but after the KGB grab the alien corpse from the warehouse, it isn't seen or used again.

Leading to the question - what was their reasoning for stealing the corpse? Did I miss a scene???

It is when they get to the jungle. They bring it with them. That is where they get the Crystal Skull by removing it from the corpse. They found an alien in Russia but the head was destroyed.
