'They all had careers'

As the plot thickened (read: got more and more stupid) and the wonderful twists (read: more and more stupid things) just kept coming, I couldn't help but to think of the actors and how they must have felt while making this masterpiece.

I mean, most of these people have been in, at least, relatively good productions. Maybe making movies like this spawns all those classic, bitter has-beens.

Eleniak: "I used to do good, Casper, now I'm playing a pleasure bot in Dracula 3000. I want my old job back. At least I got some fresh air an'all."
Van Dien: "Yeah, Erica, I was a Starship Trooper; now look at me, I've got red contacts and a poolcue."
Coolio: "Hey, what about me? I had a nice music career, now I'm a retard and talking about anacondas!"
That Vampire Guy: "At least I was never famous."

"Yeah, you lucky bastard."

I'm glad i had a nice hangover when watching this.

Don't forget Tiny Lister, the President of Earth in The Fifth Element.

Oh yeah, that's the demotion of a lifetime. From President to Mr Crappy Tough Guy.

reply

Yeah, crappy tough guy that lasts until the end of the movie to get the pleasurebot before they are all destroyed.

But he does it with such style, such sophistication. Tiny Lister should have been the star of 'The Ladies Man.' Tim who? In fact, we should all get together and start a write in campaign. Remake 'The Ladies Man' with Tiny Lister as the lead.

While they're busy doing that, I'll be jabbing myself in the head with the sharpest fork I can find.

Heh...come on...if you were a large black typecast muscle man in hollywood..what are you ever gonna get? Shakespeare? I think that he is a decent actor...his performance in The Fifth Element was classic

reply

Far be it for me to besmirch the acting talents of a man who weighs 300 lbs and is 6'7". I can run pretty fast, but not fast enough. I'm sure anything I have to say about him won't reflect negatively on a career full of highlights like 'Wishmaster 2' and 'No Holds Barred.' I respectfully submit that while he was arguably the best actor in this film (I'm hesitant to use the word film as that insults the entire body of world cinema and every film it has ever produced) the competition wasn't ... shall we say, formidable?

reply

I don't know if I would call him the best actor in the film, I mean come on...casper van deim..this guy can add to his credits "sleepy hollow" and
"space troopers" not to mention "tracker"....I think that the 2 would have to share any "acting" accolades given in this film, albeit misguided as they may have been.

As far as I could see, Van Dien was the only one who managed to make his character even vaguely resemble a normal human being... but then maybe they weren't supposed to be that. Some of them were total drugheads and some of them weren't even humans... and just for the record, it's Starship Troopers. I'm not sure Tracker is a real claim to fame, but Time Shifters was a pretty good movie even for non-scifi buffs and Omega Code was one of the biggest grossing indies for those who keep track.

And the director also made "Sarafina" and "Dangerous Ground", two films with big stars and theatrical releases.

I think it would be remiss of someone not to mention the fact that Darrel Roodt, who directed this has been responsible for some fairly good work. He's a South African and the South African films that he has directed have really been quite good. Sarafina and Cry, The Beloved Country were both good, being on a par with the best of local South African movies. "Yesterday" was an incredibly good, heartfelt and honest film about a woman living with AIDs in South Africa and her relationship with her daughter. It was nominated for an academy award for a foreign film, but ultimately lost out to The Sea Inside.

This makes the fact that he chooses to dabble in this science fiction nonsense from time to time even more unforgivable. He's clearly a talented chap, but when he's not making good South African films, he's making appalling Science-Fiction.
