I like both

I like both for what they are. They feel so different that I have trouble comparing them. The original is a timeless classic but this one is still good and more in line with the authors vision.

Exactly. Thank you so much, I've always valued both very much too. People somehow don't understand it's the same book. If I have enough spare time sometimes, I like to watch them back to back. Even if the new one doesn't become a classic, it was still very successful. If it does, this story will have a distinct honor of both films based on a book that are on the same shelf of film reputation history.

I hate 98.23 percent of remakes (wondering if I really keep track to that level? :) )

I like this one. I grew up on the original like most folks my age but love this one perhaps a bit more.

Is very bad to steal Jobu's rum. Is very bad.

^I like your history, one is old fashioned and one isn't, as well.

Growing up with the first one with all those great songs, I thought both movies were good and found a nice surprise around every corner. Really enjoyed the updates to Slugworth, Charlie's house and the multi-Deep Roy and of course loved the fabulous Busby Berkeley numbers! Glad to get more details on Charlie's family, Willie's childhood and his father the dentist. It took me a while to catch that Willie's gloves and his father's were the same kind. Good ending too seeing the children leaving the factory so you knew they actually were safe. This is one of my favorite parts for the very versatile Johnny Depp.
