Sophie and Laura Dern

Didn't Sophie look an awful lot like Laura Dern? I thought that when she first showed up in the movie, and then they went to see Blue Velvet and I thought that that was very ironic.

reply

Yes, that does seem a little ironic. However, I wonder how the older kid would've felt seeing Short Circuit, since there is a scene in there of Ally Sheedy's character in a bathtub and we don't see her breasts but the robot does. I mention this because he said he was going to see that film.

The thing that stood out to me in that scene is that it was the kids who were at first going to see Short Circuit. But it was the father who mentioned Blue Velvet was playing. And true to form, the son went along with the father.

Interestingly, the father didn't immediately put Short Circuit down as being a fluffy escapism movie, as I might have guessed his character would. Maybe he was just trying to be polite by only suggesting a different movie.

There was another scene in which the father and the son were watching TV and were watching Three's Company. I wouldn't think that would be something the father would sit still for.

reply

Yeah I noticed that too. They looked a lot alike in that scene.

I actually thought Sophie looked a lot like Laura Linney who played Walt's mother. This was probably the director's intention though to show he had some kind of psychological complex about her.

reply

thought that also!

I thought there were a few nods to Blue Velvet in there...Sophie as Dern contrasted with the older black haired Lili, like Dorothy in that movie.

The kid's name is Frank and I thought for a second he might be drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon!

Other things reminded me of Blue Velvet too, the older kid walking through the park like when the guy finds the ear in the park or Jeffery's dad having a heart attack and then the kid going to see his dad. It had to be intentional.

right on my man

reply

Heh, he was drinking PBR.
