504 Peugeot

What is the point of owning a 504 Peugeot in the 80's ?
Is it because Bernard is fond of "french culture" ?
Unfortunately, in France it was bought by popular classes (especially with a diesel engine) and certainly not by university professors ...

It may have been the Hoi-Polloi's chariot of choice in France, but in the US during the 80's they were driven by either: Yuppies as status symbols, Or, By people with a taste for the quirkeyness, or Francophiles. Fans of them always praised their smooth ride quality.

I worked as a mechanic in a repair shop in an affluent area in the 80's, and from what I could see they were, by the standards here, expensive to maintain, but their fans were quite loyal to the marque.

Très intéressant !

Fortunately, it is not a stationwagon.
We had a sort of pleasant saying at the times, in Paris and its outskirts :
When you can see a station wagon with four people inside, if it is a Peugeot, they are Arabs, if it is a Renault, it's the police.

I used to bag groceries in an affluent neighborhood back in the 80's,and some of the more uppity yuppies and intellectuals drove BMW's, Mercedes and also Peugeot. I remember a peugeot commercial that showed engineers putting the cars through all sorts of punishing test to show how well built the cars were. One day while putting some groceries in a ladies old rattle-trap hooptie, I noticed the name "Peugeot" on the trunk. The lady was appologizing for the condition of the car, because her trunk was held down by a piece of wire, and the rest of the car was junk also. So I remarked that I had seen the commerical on TV about how good they were, and she laughed that she had seen the same thing and thought it was hilarious because hers was falling apart and it wasn't that old. She smiled and gave me a dollar tip.
