just finished the movie, JESUS GOD...
So sad. Anyone who has experienced parents divorcing or just dysfunctional families in general could understand this movie well, I think.

shareYeah, joined custody is a bitch :S
Damn it, Hirschberg!
The most amazing moment, was when Bernard tries to discreetly tell Walt about his mum's affair when they're at the tennis ground. He acts like its casual, like he doesnt want to tell him, but so obviously is trying to get him on his side. Very perceptive and really on the ball.
shareThis was a brilliant movie and should be seen by anyone contemplating divorce, especially if there are children involved. The kids in this movie were BRILLIANT by the way some of the best acting in recent memory.
shareBitch enough to make me want to go smoke a joined.
shareMy parents divorced and did joint custody. And most of my family is pretty dysfunctional. I didn't relate to this movie at all. I guess it's just not for me.
"And then he started cheating...especially at magnetic travel scrabble."
I teared up at the end when Walt is standing in the hospital room with his father telling him that he's basically done with him. I remember being in damn near that exact same position when I was a few years younger than his character. I was able to relate to everything happening in that scene, and it kinda killed me for a second.
Even aside from that, this movie is so spot on. I didn't come from a privileged intellectual background - lower middle class average lifestyle - but the themes and dialogue were so resonant with me. I lived through a lot of the same themes the film covers despite a completely different environment. As one poster mentioned, when the father is "apprehensively" telling his son about his mother's affair among other similar scenes - this is where the film's heart lies. It says so much and paints these characters in these scenes so well. It's an hour and fifteen minute film that's probably denser than the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy.
