Am I the only one who didn't like it?

I got it. I got the character development, I understand that none of the characters are supposed to be enjoyable. I understand that this is a depiction of a family maturing and changing. I typically like realistic films like this, but didn't anyone else simply not find it entertaining or redeemable?
I just found it incredibly tedious and grating. I'm kind of surprised by how many people love it.

you know there are several movies that drone on and dont seem to have a point that I DESPISE but have awesome reviews.

Personally, I liked this movie, because the story it showed wasn't traditional, in the sense theres a problem, a struggle, and some kind of definitive ending, but moreso in my mind this movie was a fable that was intended for thought. I liked this movie because I could see how *beep* up family structures produce *beep* up people that i encounter. Others may have liked it because they came from a divorced family and relate to the story told.

However, if you are unable to draw those coorrelations in your life, then this movie is simply a story with no ending and no point. Its all relative to the person. I thought the movie after the sunset was abysmal, but people loved it. It was because I was unable to relate it into my life, I was unable to derive some sort of value from it.

I like all of the actors - surprisingly big names for an indy film, but I hated the writing/screenplay. It was described as subtle and turned out to be totally one-sided. That dad had absolutely no redeeming qualities. (but it was fun to indulge in hating him :-) But it failed at depicting the subtleties of real conflicts.

I loved it. I liked it at the first viewing but it grew on me even more as I watched it repeatedly. I like sarcastic characters and people who take little parting shots at each other. I find it funny if the dialog is clever enough and it was in this case. It reminded me of Whit Stillman at his best but I understand some people don't care for that sort of thing.

I liked the acting... it is well written... but somehow it just irritated me. In the end I feel like I didn't sympathize with any of the characters. The way he sways back to his mom was a bit too quick...

So the theme is heavy... just happy my family got through divorce without so much idiocy.

You aren't alone, I really didn't like it and I'm suprised at its high imdb rating. It was awful, the characters were so unlifelike and so distant from anything close to realistic and they were completely unlikeable (perhaps with the exception of Frank, I liked him at first). It was just really bad, wholly unrealistic (I don't know why it keeps being described as honest or real or whatever) and almost everything the characters said or did made me feel queasy. Maybe its just that me, my family and my experience with humans in general is so entirely unlike this that I just can't relate to anything in it, but I just felt it was wrong in every sense a film can be wrong.

Utter pretentious crap. I can't believe it got such a high rating on Netflix, whose viewers usually rate films more adeptly than on IMDB. And I'm a former child of an ugly divorce myself; I would have a field day if my parents had behaved even remotely as mature as the parents in this had!

Look at how happy you are, so carefree. It's almost as if you don't know you're Billy Bush!-Triumph

I found this movie absolutely pointless, ugly, and beyond uninteresting.
I mean, how is it supposed to be interesting?
Was it a big deal because both the parents have a phd in literature? Is that it?
Or because the director/writer is famous (is he??)?

Lots of kids go through divorce and they don't make a movie about it, this was kind of a pretentious statement: look at my parents' divorce, and my semen-smearing brother, look at my dad's cursing, bla bla bla...

Completely stupid.

And on top of that it's set in the 80's, so of course the film is ugly.

Really, really didn't get the point!
