Joan Wasn't A Good Mother

Bernard was not the only self-centered or mean-spirited character in this film; I think Joan had a considerable amount of narcissism too.

"Mommy needs some nights alone"? Despite the joint custody dictating those terms, that seemed a cruel thing to say to a child starved for his mother's company (and who, in normal circumstances, would be a full-time parent). Instead of comfort, she dished out pseudo-bohemian "coldness", as if she was above warmth & protectiveness, to her own children. It was as if indeed she wanted to rid herself of the task of even half-time mothering (and feed her ego with her literary ambitions & other gratifications).

Calling her teenage son a *beep* etc. There were reasons Walt resented her, apart from being influenced by his pompous father. (And, at least, Bernard wanted time with his children, even if he also was egocentric and involved with Lily).

He might have been a bad father, yet she was an equally terrible mother. I understand no-one is perfect, BTW, and that it's a film, but that's my take. Father-bashing has been so common for some time, I think many tend to turn a blind eyes to bad mothering, or make excuses for it, blaming the father for all & holding him accountable for everything.

The two, in this case, were to blame.

Bernard didn't want time with his children because he loved them like Joan. I'm a huge fan of Jeff Daniels, but he is clearly written as the villain-like character. Like Frank said, "he likes to have [them] in the house." He just wanted to stroke his ego and beat his son(s) at ping-pong. Walt, unfortunately, bought into all his bullcrap. He didn't even have a heart-attack. He faked it to regain Walt's attention and bring him back to his side in the fight against Joan. Walt realized thanks to the shrink that Bernard wasn't around much when he was younger and most likely sleeping around on Joan, but did it so discreetly that no one knew.

Joan wasn't perfect, I'll agree to that extent. But, she showed concern for her sons. "Oh, sweetie, that water is gross." When Walt shows duress and confesses to her about Sophie, she listens and asks him why he broke up with her. He has a good moment with her before Bernard comes into the room. Bernard started sleeping with Lili, a 20-year old, who Walt happened to be in love with. Joan was actually honest with Bernard and her boys.

What film did you watch, Yes she was better than Bernard but anyone would be that, the OP was saying she was bad in her own way. Certain things you keep away from your kids but she seemed to let them in on things they should not have to witness. I won't go into it but the kid may have gotten some of his wild behavior from her and the things she was doing.

The film really does not want us to place one parent over the other but for us to understand the kids were more tolerant on her actions more so than Bernard, Even though they were both horrible.

Amazing read on the siutation. I used to see Bernard as a victim but your message put him in the right place.

I thought both parents were awful. They were just different mixes of narcissism and passive aggression.

I agree Kenny. But I think the mom was a good parent at one time. When the older boy was with the therapist and he was talking about his happy memories they were all about him and his mom. He couldn't seem to remember any with his father, and I think this was a life changer for him.

Actually, Baumbach (who based the parents on his own) has expressed pain that so many people see the film this way. He says he intended both Bernard and Joan to be seen as real people, with flaws and virtues in equal measure. I was really glad to hear this, because until I did, I had started to wonder if I had been "watching the movie wrong". I personally liked both of the parents and was surprised to read all the critical reaction describing them or at least Bernard as villainous.
