Two questions (possible Spoilers)

1. Why is the title "The Squid and the Whale"? I know they show a museum exhibit with a squid and a whale, but what does this have to do with the movie? Is it just because the parents were fighting like a squid and a whale? If so, that's kind of lame, like the film.

2. Why was Frank smearing his semen all over the library books? WTF? Disgusting!

3. And why did I waste my time watching this mediocre film? OK yes I know that's three questions.

Schrodinger's cat walks into a bar, and / or doesn't.

1. Walt told the Asian shrink that he was afraid to look at the squid/whale exhibit at the museum when he was a kid, but his mother would comfort him at home. At the end of the movie he conquered this fear and accepted his parents' incompatible differences, presumably represented by the squid and the whale.

2. The psychological ramifications of experiencing his parents' separation. It was his form of venting negative emotions, along with excessive cussing, drinking and so on.

3. I didn't find it a waste of time, but rather gripping, realistic, frank, quirky and amusing. It was unsurprisingly based on the director's real-life experiences.
