'Puritan' American thinking...

This is what director John Maybury labeled american test audiences when they gaffed (and succesfully had REMOVED) the s3x scene between Keira & Adrien.

Never thought about it, but he's so RIGHT...North American audiences will sooner keep a bloody torture scene over a love making scene with a little nudity any day. Puritans we are!

You gave Taken an 8/10 compared to a 6/10 for the Jacket? Haha ok.

It's only after you've lost everything that you're free to do anything.

The"common knowledge" that Americans are Puritans compared to more "sophisticated" foreign film audiences is greatly exaggerated.

I did some research on the popularity of movies that did well in America, Europe, and Asia and found that one thing they have in common is that the top grossing movies are ones that are funny, have mild violence, imply or show modest sex, and are adventurous. "Pirates of the Caribbean" is the model for a hit the world over. Foreign markets do not reward the gross-out movies (comedy or horror) that play well in America nor do they seem to like the CG films such as "The Incredibles". I found no indication that they value sex more than we do or that they reject violence more than we do, with the exception mentioned above: mindless torture/violence (Saw III) does not play nearly as well in most foreign markets. The fact that it does play well in America disturbs me no small amount.

It seems that people are thinking of the French art house movies when that speak of sexual liberties. Of course those are the same films (more or less) that we can see at art houses in America.

old movies didnt do that stuff because they couldn't, take Casablanca, they wanted Rick to leave with Ilsa, but censors enforced that wouldnt be appropriate with her being married to Victor.

Lets face it censorship sucks many films have been limited by this. Hopefully the film industry will get their act together and release Directors uncut+ theatrical cut at the same time in cinema's and let people decide which version they want to watch.

Good thing, Casablanca would have been horrible if it ended like that.

Who are you calling "we," kemo sabe?

The American film industry, incidentally, turns out quite a bit of gratuitou nudity, sex scenes, etc. This is patently true. And that doesn't even include the actual porn. Whatever "test audiences" were involved here, they obviously aren't indicative of America's ability to churn out sex and nudity.
