Jack London

I wanted to see how much remained of the Jack London story that I had assumed inspired the film. The answer was, not a lot. In London's story, the hero is a murderer who is tortured in prison by being strapped in to an especially constrictive straight jacket to the point of near suffocation and left for hours at a time. He learns to escape by reliving past lives before eventually being executed. At least that's how I remember the story which I last read over 30 years ago. So about the only thing that remains is the straight jacket itself. But never mind, I enjoyed the film though I think more could have been made of the often excellent supporting brits. If you're interested try googling 'Jack London Star Rover' to find full copies of the story online.

Interesting - I only remember the hero reliving past lives - castaway, consort to a queen amongst others - but no space ship as mentioned in your post. I'll have to read the story again. As an aside I recently read some H Rider Haggard books where he sent his hero to relive past-lives. Must have been a popular theme at the time.

I found a copy here http://london.sonoma.edu/Writings/StarRover/chapter1.html and put it on my phone. Could not have done that when I last read the story.
