I am so confused.

I've never seen this movie and I really want to because it looks hilarious but I don't want to rent it because I don't think I get the whole idea of it. Let me see if I got this straight. Jack Black and Kyle Glass made up this fake band idea and made a TV show out of it and then about six years later they make a movie with the same characters and everything that they had from the TV show and both the TV show and the movie are just totally ridiculous and stupid but funny at the same time? Is that at all right? I really need some help on this PLEASE!

its not a fake band

As the previous poster said, it is not a fake band. It also is not Kyle Glass, it is Kyle Gass.

You should at least rent it and give it a try. I don't think you will be disappointed.

That just burns me up

do I have to watch the tv show to understand it?

uh, while it's not a requirement it is definitely recommended that you at least listen to their original CD before you watch this movie. There are TONS of inside references and jokes made around the CD and previous show.

And to elaborate on what other posters have said, Tenacious D is a real band by definition, but it is a comedy band. This follows the "alleged" way that they met up. Just to clarify that none of this is actually real. Does that make any sense?

reply

when did their CD come out? Before the show, before the movie?

reply

after the show, before the movie

reply

There are a real band centred around a mythology. For example, they never got together the way they did in the movie (obviously), but when they put cds they base it upon as if they did get together that way. Does that make sense? It is almost like a giant alter ego.

We can't stop here, this is bat country!

Here's some info which might help:

The Tenacious D show (six ten-minute episodes on HBO) came first in 1997, The show is similar to 'Flight of the Concords': Jack and Kyle get into various adventures with a handful of songs in between. A lot of the songs appeared on their self-titled album (released in 2000) with a bunch of skits by Jack and Kyle. Their songs tend to be acoustic/hard rock/metal and parody a lot of the pretensions/satanic worship of 'cock rock'/power metal/hair metal bands as well as some childish humor.

They released a live DVD 'The Complete Masterworks' in 2003. This features an hour-long concert from 2002 (covering most of the songs from the self-titled album, with just Jack and Kyle playing acoustic guitar), music videos, docos, short films and all the HBO episodes.

Before the Pick of Destiny, they released the soundtrack which has all the songs, and excerpts, from the movie.

Last year they releases 'The Complete Masterworks 2' which has a concert with some of the POD songs. I haven't bought the DVD yet, but I've seen the concert and it's pretty good, with more electric guitar.

I hope that helps. I would reccomend buying the Masterworks' DVDs, as they have a lot of content.

thank you that helps me understand a lot more than I did

reply

No worries, glad I could help. The good thing about the D is they don't have a huge back catalogue, so it doesn't take long to catch up on their old stuff.

reply

Somehow, I had never even heard of the D before. I don't remember seeing any advertisments for the movie, no trailers nothing.

I was in a webcam chat room, and somebody played CLASSICO, and I asked what the hell that was. And she explained it to me. Well, I went to AMAZON.COM and ordered the CD PICK OF DESTINY just for this song. Then I realised it was a soundtrack for a movie, and then I went ahead and ordered the movie, and the first album. I did not evcn know about the TV untill I read about here on the IMDB.

All that aside, THE PICK OF DESTINY is now included in my Banzuke of favorite movies! I gotta go see if I can order the dvd of the series now!!!
