I would have guessed you so, but maybe I'm wrong. If I hadn't loved the HBO shorts from way back in the day, this movie would have been pretty terrible. So much of the movie is borrowed from those I think it helps understand the characters and the humor. Without that, it wouldn't make much sense. Can anyone testify or disagree with that?

I would disagree. Since a lot of humor is recycled from their earlier works it meant, to me at least, that the jokes were predictable. Now you take a younger person, an adolescent who knows nothing about The D or maybe even the references to other things that the film makes and the film is going to seem totally fresh, funny and more than a little bit crazy. There aren't really that many in-jokes (that I could see) so it' not like a View Askew production or something like that. A few of their actor friends show up in bit parts but besides that, it's all pretty easy to follow. I predict this movie will,in the future, be a well loved little cult gem for all the people for whom it was the means of discovering the D in the first place. So, even though it was a flop to begin with, it'll have the last laugh. :)

I only new JB from other movies. I didn't know who TD was until this movie. I'd say, No, you don't need to watch any of their stuff to enjoy this movie.
