here's why i can't understand why this film flopped

now, i'm sure everyone has their own personal taste, but at the time of release Jack Black was on F'N fire. i mean, School Of Rock, King Kong, Nacho Libre and Shark Tale were all big hits, so were the F was his fanbase?

Also, they released THAT teaser which was a massive internet hit all over the world, so why the F wasn't the film that the tailer was for a hit aswell?!?!

not only that, most people who actually DID see this film loved it so word of mouth should've helped.

of all the films that have flopped in my lifetime this is the film that i am the most shocked about. seriously.

yeah, but for it to bomb THIS badly? come on, it just doesn't make sense to me.

i mean, The Fountain also came ouf the same weekend but i can understand why some people didn't want to see it because it's such a complicated film.

but it's a Jack Black comedy for fawk sake!

But lots of his fans are potheads too...well not only that, but I think he's popular for a few age groups. My cousin is nine and loves him. I'm 21 and I think he's amazing. My dad's like 44, and he almost pee's his pants laughing at his movies. So, I have to disagree with Leela Odin. Yeah, he has a large family fan base, but from movies like Orange County, Saving Silverman, and many others there is also an adult audience.

Believe it or not, I actually thought it looked stupid! Then, one day, I was flipping through the movie channels and I caught the last 'final showdown' and could not stop laughing!!! It's now one of my favorite comedies. I watch it A LOT!

I'm fabulous

Nacho Libre and Sharks Tale were hardly a huge hit or even a hit at all.

reply

Nacho Libre was a hit. It cost $35 mill and made $99 mill ($80m of which was just domestically). Shark Tale also made a lot more than it took to produce. $367m on $75m, not including home video and the money from HBO or whatever premium network that paid for the rights to air it.

Well, I'm gonna have to disagree. I'm a freakin' Mormon and I think they're hilarious. Of course, I haven't seen the film and only listen to clean edits of their songs...

Yes, I am a pussy.

Personally, I never go to the cinema because I hate the general public, especially when there are lots of them, because it increases the chances of meeting tw@ts. And I have a short fuse. Because when someone spoils my viewing experience I tend to think of the 6 quid I've spent and want to make them pay it me back in kind. I'm not a nice person when I get into the cinema. Sometimes I can be a reasonable adult and get the reaction I want from the offenders, but sometimes I just flip. And the fall-out from that is a nightmare to live through.

So I was never going to see this film when it first came out anyway. But it rules. And I'm 85 you know.

If I spiked you, you'd know you'd been spoken to

You're 85 years old and still don't know how to act like an adult?

Dude, he said that 3 and a half years ago. He's probably dead now.

As others have pointed out, an "R" rated film geared for the youth audience, is going to be box-office challenged, to say the least.

Me(19) and my whole family from age 9-48 loves this movie. And im the only stoner:p

It's maybe the best comedy i've seen cus of the music and jack blacks absurd behaviour:p

reply

How many of you saw it in a movie theatre?

reply

I love this movie and I am not a stoner. I also saw it twice in theatre

STFU about Batman's voice already

reply

Everyone. And we have 3 copies of the dvd cause some of our relatives publish some of the american movies in my country

reply

To clarify my question above: "How many of you saw it in a movie theatre?"

Re killahbillah1's post about his whole family loving it: loving it on DVD is not enough to prevent it from flopping. You have to actually have gone out to a movie theatre and seen it.

i dont want to genralise or offend people, but the D fanbase contains allot of stoners and lazy people (myself included) and apparently allot of em didnt realise that it was out. apparently people still go up to kiyle and ask him when "that D film"s coming out.

The trailer they kept showing had me worried, course I did see it four times, but I know no one wanted to see it mainly due to the odd trailer, very over-the-top and unsure of it's tone.

The classico trailer was perfect, as it works in the film obviously, and would have been better to have something more like that as promotional material instead of the silly and odd trailer.

My fave film is Garden State, but don't hold that against me.

well remember Snakes on a Plane? That was an explosion across the internet but had a pretty meager opening compared to what people were expecting. Apparently viral marketing doesn't always work
