Maximum Overthruster is actually more likely a reference to Buckaroo Banzai. As the titular character invents a device called the Oscillation Overthruster, which basically moves the "empty space" between atoms in a solid object to one place. Allowing him to drive a car through solid matter... A mountain.
In the movie the main character, Buckaroo Banzai is a renascence man. He's a medical doctor, a scientist, an artist and... A rock star.
