the R Rating might not have been the problem actually.

I always thought that the R Rating is what hurt this movie the most, I always figured that if it was pg 13 a lot of teenagers would have seen it and it would have done better.

but the movie The Rocker kind of disproves that seeing how similar the movies are and how both of them deal with rock.

that movie was basically Made to bring in the young crowds in and it completely flopped at the box office. it did pretty band and no one really saw it.

This movie was much much better than the Rocker, but the rocker being PG and failing kind of makes me see how this might have not done better if it was rated lower

This was a PG 13 movies incorrectly rated as R, so yeah, your initial analysis was correct. I havent seen the Rocker, but given that its PG its probably very watered down in comparison.

the rocker was basically similar as school of rock but not as funny and not in a classroom (the kids are older)

Some old broke dude that was in a band that gets kicked out (A decade earlier) becomes a loser living in someone's attic with no job, Find out a group of kids has a band (but just a garage band) and when they need to play their prom he joins the band to play prom.
then he starts to get them gigs at clubs and they start to get big, they star to tour, He starts to live his dream with this band of teenagers (the ending is almost the same ending as school of rock)

the movie was pg and it was marketed to teens, the movie was about rock and bands, similar to this a little bit. both movies have a road trip part to them,
that movie completely failed and flopped. so What I was saying before was that, maybe even if this was PG 13 people wouldnt have cared

I would have to disagree entirely. Tenacious D has never been a pg-13 band, ever. From the beginning as a TV show on HBO they did dirty stuff. Then they continued it through their short films and first album too. At no point have they ever done anything that could be construed as pg-13.
