Enjoyed the movie but this gets me...

The main character, steals an artists paintings to try and pass them off as his own, and then after he makes it big. He acts like it was all him. This kid in the end didn't care about the art, he cared about the fame, and cared about trying to get some punanny from the "hot model". Wow. I felt empathic towards him in the beginning, then at the end the guy is exactly what the Bordo dude calls him, "a douchebag". Now, don't get me wrong, Bordo was just a pessimistic punk, but how much of an a-hole is Putz??

Along with the really corny kiss at the end, this kind of ruined the movie for me. I gave it a 6 though, it is a decent flick, and I loved certain parts of it (I've gone through art programs all my life), but wow what a bad taste to leave off with when the credits roll.

Thats the idea. He was good before and he was underappreciated for his talent but he becomes big when he is arrested for something he didn't do.

i understood the ending very differently, i thought he was sort of punishing himself for what he did and how he didn't "get the girl". and the kiss at the end was supposed to signify that he would lave jail becase audrey wanted him; he could stop punishing himself.
but maybe i misinterpretted it, i thought this was the cheesy happy ending that the dramedy called for.

but what do i know!?

first of all, i thought this movie was awful. i am actually watching it again right now to see if i somehow did not get what it was supposed to be. anyway...

the fact that the protag did what he did was to show the shallow and bull$hit nature of the art world. art is really supposed to simply be about self expression, and in that sense, the protag was not a true artist. sure, he could draw a pretty picture, but that is not what makes a great artist. the irony with his character is that he claims picasso as his favorite artist, but picasso was all about his perspective, while our hero does not have one. again, he can only draw a pretty picture. i think that in the end, he finally realizes that he doesnt really care about art, he just wants to be seen as a great artist. he found the way to get his fame, and in the end he shows that the art world (in the opinion of the film maker) is fake and hypocritical. This movie was so flawed. Too bad, because i loved crumb and ghost world.

I loved the movie, but I imagine this movie would deeply offend anyone in the art world. It's a pretty scathing look at artists. It does to the art world what Nashville did to country music.

The only thing offensive about this movie is its complete waste of talent. Yikes! This movie doesn't even deserve to be on the same shelf as Nashville.

Maybe that WAS the point of the movie, that you can only get noticed in the Art World by being a douchebag.

By the way, I really enjoyed the movie.

reply

Yeah, it's supposed to be ironic.
