is Ethan Suplee's character based on kevin smith?

cause it's sort of the impression that i got. i love clerks and clerks 2, but after watching all the behind the scenes stuff i do get the impression that kevin is a little like ethan's character.

ethan was in clerks 2 so he has worked with kevin and seen what he's like - but they were both released in 06 so i'm not sure which was shot first. it could just be a coincidence

Yeah I thought that too.

Ethan Suplee was in at least one other KS film. The one was Mallrats which came out after Clerks in the later 1990s. They probably are friends or whatever as are others in the industry that have worked together.

I agree that it could be possible that the Ethan's character had some KS attributes.

Like other Terry Zwigoff films, ASC was not meant for the masses, yet the IMDB comments rip it apart. I thought it was OK, but not great by any means. Good cast though.

I never thought of that, but now that you mention it, yeah...he could be!

I was thinking this the entire movie. Well in fact I knew this was what he was going for. They are good friends and he was obviously playfully mocking Kevin Smith. The clothes he wears was my first clue, and then it's VERY obvious at the end when he has on another Kevin Smith type attire and the backwards hat with a beard. A dead ringer there.

I don't think Kevin Smith went to film school (PLEASE correct me on this if I'm wrong).

My cousin goes to VFS and he said that Kevin Smith was all set to go there once upon a time, but he dropped out and used his refunded tuition money to make Clerks.

I actually haven't met any film students that try to be Kevin Smith or that are like Ethan Suplee's character. However, it is common for film kids to write stuff that is clichéd and be completely convinced that it's original. It happens to everybody...

In the last scene, Ethan is dressed EXACTLY like Kevin Smith. He has a full beard, glasses, and is wearing similar clothing. That really made me think of him lol.

Terry Zwigoff has said that he based his direction of Suplee's character on Troy Duffy (the director of Boondock Saints) who had a movie deal with Miramax until he ruined it with his massive ego and by acting how Suplee does in the film.

On the trivia for the movie 'Overnight', which is a documentary about Duffy, it says..

"According to a RUSiriusRadio.com pod-cast interview, Director Terry Zwigoff based his direction for Ethan Suplee in Art School Confidential on the way Troy Duffy acts as a director in this documentary."
