Funny If you have ever been to art school!!

It didn't have the greatest plot in the world and the depth of the main characters may have been comparable to Lake Erie but I did found it absolutely hilarious. I have never actually been to art school but I have dated a lot of artists and been to their class and showings and stuff and this film just hit dead on all the cliché characters that you find there from the crappy teachers triangles (that it took him 25 years to get to Ha-Ha) to the crappy self portrait that was basically scribbled shapes to the minimalist vibrant color giant five year old drawing that are acclaimed for being daring. So funny every step of the way, I loved all the characters it is like taking a mirror and holding it up to the student body of my little liberal arts college that I am at (minus all the Jocks, for some reason we have sports teams). Jerome the main character was even my roommate freshman year. Anyway as far as movies go it wasn't great and the love story was lacking but otherwise I loved it and am going to recommend it to all my friends. Hilarious.

P.S. I also love once they think Jerome is the murder everyone loves his work and once they know he's a cop everyone hates Jonah's.

i went to a high school for the (performing & visual) arts, and i see several familiar characters in this film. don't know if i'd have found it as appealing if i hadn't attended an arts school myself, though?
we had some fairly weird goings-on-campus during my 3 years there...but no strangler (l.o.l.) the writer of this film obviously injected this storyline as a commentary on the art world (based upon what the main character does in the end to further his status in that world).
this film focuses on only one part of the arts world you'd typically find at an arts school. but, that one part is rife with opportunities for satire. i took a couple of art (drawing and painting) classes, and the "burned-out" teacher (played by john malkovich) especially - is a familiar character.
i think the film has some laugh-out-loud funny moments early on - before it becomes more of a black comedy - and, there are some great bits that skewer contemporary artists, and their world, but there are also a bunch of stock characters that keep the movie from really being a top flight satire.

I loved the part where Jonah was describing to Jerome all the different types of art students. It's so true, I've seen about a thousand of those in my art classes! I laughed out loud when he said "And then there's the mother who's youngest just left the nest and she needs to find something to fill her time and give her self worth." And then the woman goes to the professor and says "This class is really giving me a wonderful and valuable experience!" I've seen so many moms in my classes who have the same story, and do the same for my professors! One of them even refused to call the professor by his Professor "Last Name" title, and was calling him by his first name. He told her to address him as Professor "Last Name", and she said "I'm older than you, we're both adults. Do I really have to?" He just gave her a cold stare and walked away. It was priceless.

Yes! You are 100% right.

I saw the movie this past December because I wanted to maybe see what they came up with and I thought it was funny.
I was suprised how much I actually knew what was going on.
We even use the same equiptment they use.
That's the only brand apparently- it's like an unwritten rule!
I laugh at my fellow art students... not so much as the teachers though.
I've only come across maybe two duchebag students.
But, I relate to the main character.
My stuff is actual real drawings... not poo on paper.
But I have noticed the fine line between what the task is that is assigned
And what one is capable of (and trying to make it seem good).

P.S.-

I don't know what that emo crying chick was about.
And, we're not allowed to have a nude person in studio yet.
I don't think it's allowed.

The stereotypes are dead-on balls-accurate. The mom who is ready to "ripen," the buddist vegan, the teachers...

haha i completely agree. both colleges i have gone to (i transferred!) were arts-based schools. i went for theater myself, but i knew a LOT of visual artists. especially the first school i went to, new paltz in upstate new york, had tons of artists and was a very laid back campus with a lot of hippies. so i generally found all the stereotypes were completely accurate lol
if i wasn't an arts person and experienced that type of atmosphere and those people, idk if i would have found it as enjoyable lol

A lot of it was funny but they made art seem so depressing. I go to an art school and yes SOME FEW teachers can be harsh but for the most part every other teacher and student is totally positive. They made art school seem so horrible and scary.

I thought it was funny too! I'm surprised to see how many people didn't like it. I'm terrible at art and avoided it, but based on the artists I know, this is incredibly realistic! The twist was also pretty good. It's been a while since I saw it but I remember being surprised about how it was refreshingly good.

I have never been to art school and have no talent whatsoever (much like Jonah), but I've known a lot of artists and think this was a pretty good satire of their work and their pretenses. But I wish this had been more of a Christopher Guest-type film than a romance/murder mystery/black comedy/whatever it wanted to be in any given scene. 7/10 stars.
