why god why?

steve buscemi and john malcovich were good supporting characters and it was a shame angelica houston was underused.

but other than that this movie sucked. it had no tone, it started out as a comedy and turned into...well the ending was dreck.

jerome was an uninspiring character, i couldnt care less about him and his little love interest, it went no went no where. that kiss at the end was dissapointing, everything that was building to that moment was a poor pay off, it seemed forced.

the movie had potential but it was bland and failed to do any thing.
any way that's just my two cents.

I think I blinked and missed Anjelica Huston in this movie.

Steve buscemi and john malkovich saved the movie (as it would be expected, to be honest).

I really didn't like Jerome how could he not tell something was fishy about Jimmy's paintings. especially the one with the id card.

This movie is actually very rare, in that it started out as a comedy and stayed one. Most comedies begin with a premise/set-up that is largely comedic, but the plot eventually turns dramatic, even though there are still funny moments.

This film was a satire, and it mocked the excessive desire of the main character. Desire is usually glamorized, but here it is shown as ugly and tiresome. You weren't supposed to "care" about the love interest. From the start, he only wanted her because she fit a certain image that he had in mind of an artist's girlfriend.

The kiss at the end wasn't supposed to be romantic. This film stayed a satire the entire way through. It didn't lose its muster and resort to phony rom-com third acts.

That about sums it up. Even the various stars(including the murderer/artist)couldn't save this train wreak. About two thirds through the movie I wanted to drive a spike through Jerome's head. This is a good example of how bad writing/directing can kill a good story. I cant understand how others liked this sad attempt...but I will cut this dvd in half, slam dunk it into my trash, and consider it a charitable act.

I found this story to be painfully unfunny, much like anything I've seen from Daniel Clowes. I think he just likes making fictional caricatures of people he knows. If the movie had more Buscemi it might have been bearable.
