The movie's oddly sentimental in that way, especially for the light comedy it pretends to be.

Completely agree. When this movie came out, me and my friends were 15 and it was just the perfect film to be able to relate to at that time. I watch it with fondness, and was surprised to see how poorly it did critically.
shareI have two friends from my high school days. We have not seen each outer in years but when we talk on the phone or exchange Christmas cards it is like we say each other yesterday. One is a preacher in Missouri and the other is a pilot in Nevada but friendship covers distance and we will always be in the same neighborhood.
