'That was me 6 years and 600 pounds ago'

The movie was made (and obviously set) in 2004. How can I confirm this? Simple - Lance Armstrong says he won the Tour De France 5 times in a row... which did not start until 1999-2003 (and continued from there too...)

So, how did White Goodman lose 600 pounds in 6 years from 1987-2004? Yes, I know, it's just a movie, but this seriously has to be an obvious goof in an otherwise great comedy script.

What exactly does he say that implies it's 1993?

Yes but the movie was made in 2004, not 1993, and as my first post indicated, there is proof there that the movie was made in 2004.

It takes about a year to film a movie before it's released. 'Dodgeball' was probably filmed in 2003 (after Lance won his last Tour de France), & that either:

a. the screenwriter meant to write "That was me 600 lbs. and sixTEEN years ago", and made a mistake;
b. Ben Stiller meant so say "That was me 600 lbs. and sixTEEN years ago", and made a mistake; or
c. both the writer and actor were spot on, but the production team meant to display the year 1997 on the screen which showed the 'Before'-era White Goodman, and ... you guessed it.

reply

Yeah that looks like it could be it - human error. I think option (a) though is the most logical explanation.

Or White Goodman is just an idiot who actually thought the span of 1987 to 2003 really is 6 years. He couldn't even spell his own name.

reply

Considering that character, that is totally believable. So the question is, did the filmmakers intentional make this flub because it fits the character or was it an oversight that just happens to work with the character?

reply

Or maybe it just took him 6 years to get to the weight he currently is at.. 1987-1993.. and maintainted it until 2004 losing to Averages Joe's

Do you look at a menu and say OK?

reply

Obviously the movie was made in 2004, but it was implied that it TOOK PLACE in 1993. I assumed this throughout the entire film right up until the Lance Armstrong scene, where he confirmed the movie took place in 2004. I guess we could assume that Goodman is out of touch with reality and still thinks it's 1993?

reply

Yep, that Lance Armstrong scene is the one that confused everyone about this whole thing.

The video Goodman made about his gym was made in 1987 (it says so on the screen). Then, he shows a photo of himself where he was fat and says "That was me 6 years and 600 pounds ago" thus implying the movie was set in 1993.

reply

But the internet is also mentioned in the movie (you know, the Asian wife), which was not around in 1993.

reply

They actually talk about this in the commentary they treat as a running joke, but make it clear it was a mistake. Also it is entirely possible that the picture was from '87 and he looked like that up until he began losing weight. Maybe that was just the best picture of him and it happened to be from 1987.

reply

The advertisement that he is in talking about his weight loss could have been made in 1993, but being shown on TV in 2004.

reply

I really hope you're kidding about the internet not being around in 1993. It was. I've been gaming on the internet since 1992. It was not widespread, but it was there.

reply

And there were totally sites where you could "get yourself an Asian wife" in 1993.

reply

You said the Internet wasn't around in 1993. Just admit you're a moron and move on. Human trafficking and mail-order brides aren't exactly new, either.

reply

It says on the screen "white goodman 1987" and he says "that was six years ago"

reply

Man, I wish it were 1999. I notice a lot of recent comedies or dramadies seem to take place in the 70s or something. Maybe it's my imagination, but growing up in the 80s, even though we had a lot of 50s and 60 nostalgia, maybe things are way to rough in the past ten years that people yearn for a simpler time.

It's sounds like you may be on to something.

reply

Was it just me or did Ben Stiller as White Goodman look short?

reply

Oh Ben Stiller is pretty short actually - he's only 1.7m (5' 7") - add to that in this movie his team is full of tall mutants lol, so that didn't do him any favors. Also Vince Vaughn is pretty tall too.

How long did it take for him to regain the weight?

reply

That wasn't specified... but it wouldn't seem very long!

It's in the goof section for this movie as a character error. It may have been intentional, but it's really an error no matter how you look at it. As mentioned, he should have said, "that's me, 16 and 600 pounds ago," just to keep the lingo straight.

reply

I noticed this as well, but it seems like a movie that would be set in the 90s.
