Official dodgeball
I would like to see official dodgeball started - college & pro. Those games looked like fun! :)

Maybe you've already discovered by now, but there actually is a national dodge ball league. I don't know if ESPN or any other sports channel has ever carried a game as a tryout , but here's hoping.
shareGSN aired something called "Extreme Dodgeball" for three seasons starting in 2004, and it was very simlar to the sport portrayed in this movie. It was entertaining too, but that's over now. I think it was after this movie came out.

Thanks for that note. I've watched some games online, of course. Dodgeball was the only team sport I enjoyed participating in in school phys ed. If its set up properly with the appropriate type of ball it shouldn't pose any harm to kids. The mass sport could theoretically take off with the proper professional staging and the ground rules are easy to understand. It seems to have all of the key elements needed to draw people in to play or watch. Compare the pacing to some of the other major sports.
shareOh, there's room for harm.
We played it at our school. One kid took a shot to the eye. Looked like he'd been in a 22-round boxing match. Stayed that way for nearly a week.
In today's sensitive, PC society, the school would've shelled out 6 or even 7 figure digits by the time the court cases were done.
just out of curiousity, what caused the injury? Was it the ball? How would you describe the type of ball used? Or was it a collision with somebody's elbow?
shareIt was just a rubber ball, the textured kind. It was a little bit on the hard side (over-inflated). It hit him square in the eye..like a right cross from a boxer.
The bad thing about those balls is that they were small, hand sized, and it was easy to get serious velocity on them when thrown. They were maybe a little bit bigger than softballs. The textured surface made them easy to grip...and throw.
It was a such a flush hit. And the eye is just so tender (we didn't wear eye pro...this was back in the 80's, before seatbelt craze and armored bicycle riding overkill).
The guy fully recovered, with no permanent damage. He just had an unsightly bruise to deal with for a few days.
Thanks for responding. I would imagine that somebody has designed a safer dodgeball by now for schools and recreation.
