In the intro to the movie it is White Goodman's commercial for Global Gym. Towards the end it shows a picture of White overweight with the caption "White Goodman 1987" and the voice over says it was him 6 years ago. Meaning, it's 1993. Or the same fictional commercial has been airing in the fictional universe for nearly a decade. It can't be set in '93 because of the Lance Armstrong scene towards the end.
I believe this has been discussed by the director somewhere.
My recollection is that "1987" was supposed to read "1997" but that someone made a mistake and no one caught it.
Having said that, Goodman could have looked that way in 1987 AND in 1997. The two aren't mutually exclusive.
Not too mention Peter having Mona Lisa Smile and a couple porn DVDs overdue from the video store.
