Wouldn't Peter have forfeited his bribe by winning the game?

Thereby his bet would have actually been owned by Ben stiller?

reply

Why? It was a bribe, not a contracted agreement to lose.

reply

There was a contract (Goodman presents it to Le Fleur in the hotel room). The point is that the contract had absolutely nothing to do with the Dodgeball game.

The deal Goodman offers is that he gives La Fleur $100,000, and La Fleur signs over the deeds to the gym. That's it. Period. End o' story.

Again, when they're talking about it in the reveal after Average Joe's win the tournament, it's made clear by both that the money was for the sale of the gym. At no point is a bribe to lose the game mentioned.

You could argue that it's a goof when La Fleur then refers to the money as a "bribe". I don't know about American usage but here in the UK that usage is ok... we might refer to the money as a "bribe", even though it's basically just a payment for a purchase, as a way of implying that Goodman paid over the odds.

There's no way the sale of Global Gym would've gone through, based on the contract. It was a conflict of interest.

Can you explain that further? I'm struggling to see the conflict.

reply

What was the conflict exactly? Publicly traded shares to the tune of $5,000,000 bought by Peter once he had the money.

The fact that he negotiated and willingly signed a contract with Global Gym, to basically forfeit playing in the contest. He breached that agreement by playing. At the very least, he wouldn't have been able to use the bribe money to bet with.

Based on that, he would've never won enough to buy out the controlling interest in GG.

As soon as the gaming commission (or someone with the right authority) found out about him signing a contract the night before, the deal would've been off. No $100,000 to bet with, and therefore, no prize money.

The contract that he signed had NOTHING to do with Dodgeball. The contract was purely for Average Joes Gym to be signed over to Globo Gym for $100,000 - it had nothing to do with Dodgeball or any bet. It wasn't even a bribe, even though Peter mentioned it in the movie, it was a sale.
