At the beginning when a globogym commercial plays, Dwight (stiller), says 6 years ago I was fat. The commercial shows a pic of him dated 1987. So that would make the time reference 1993.
But after the car wash when Vaughn says let's throw on the thing so g and tear this place apart.....well the thong song came out way after 1993.
So what year are they supposed to be in during the movie??
The movie released in 2004... I think IMDB trivia or goofs section states that the director's commentary mentions it was an error. But there are enough references to indicate it takes place in the present day. (Or, at least, 2004: Mona Lisa Smile, the ones you mention, etc.)
For me personally I like to consider the Globogym commercial that opens the movie is very similar to those late-night, early-morning advertisements for fitness that always seem to be shot at least a decade ago but still play today..... Flip through the channels early in the morning or late at night and you'll see plenty of these commercials that were clearly shot a VERY long time ago. Globogym just did the same exact thing.
I think even the director/writer and cast members don't even know what year it takes place in. In the commentary, they talk about the 1987 picture being 6 years ago, but don't really have an answer as to whether the movie is supposed to take place in 1993 or 2004
