Do you think he's laughing/crying because the hypnosis didn't work and he still remembers?

I think he's crying because the hypnosis couldn't erase the memories of the trauma that he had just experienced.

I was wondering this too. I think its because he still remembers. No hypnosis can erase trauma like he's experienced.
