sadly overrated
- storyline is not as bad as some members wrote.
- music is well chosen
- acting is good
- but, the movie does not suck you in, the feeling of "ok now it's going to happen" is missing
- characters are a little confusing or not worked out well. i liked the idea of an anti hero but maybe i understand something different of it

I agree, the rating is much too high for this forgettable, B-movie.

"B-movie" ? God it is annoying when people use words they don't know the meaning. And forgettable ? Sure, sure. So forgettable that the Americans made a remake of it (an awful one, but still a remake), and people still consider it a cult movie twelve years later. I give it an 8.5/10, and it's not generous.

You realize this is nothing but a cheap exploitation flick based on a comic book (aka B movie). It's forgettable in its story and execution, and all the popularity is simply because it's gory and foreign.
Incest and hypnotism are used as cheap plot devices, that give away the fact that beneath the gritty exterior, it's just a mediocre Korean melodrama.

Movies like these get usually rated on one of two things:
- how violent it is (this usually works well with the couch potatoes who have badass fantasies)
- how "surprised" morons are by the "shocker" twists.
This one hits big in both, hence the overrating.

It's interesting looking at how people rate other films. One guy who commented in here saying this is the worst movie (rating it 5/10) on the top 100, goes on to give The Godfather 6/10, Vertigo 6/10 and Spy(2015) 8/10!! Haha!
shareIt's just a case of casual movie goer syndrome. They rate movies based on face value, where as most cinephiles give a rating based on cinematography, writing, direction, acting, story, etc.

Heard a lot about it, was interested to watch the plot unravel and heard the twist was one of the best.
Once the premise is revealed it just rubbed me the wrong way. I dunno I guess I'm just not into the "vengeance/revenge" style flicks.
Just the idea of thinking the character you're behind/rooting for isn't as heroic as you want him to be kills me. Also the guy who you think is the bad guy is really the guy getting his revenge.
Interesting concept I suppose but I finished watching 5 minutes ago and went "That was F'd up!"

It is interesting to notice that also holiwood is changing now. Example : Nolans movies.. all the characters - even the bad ones have an excuse for what they are (the Joker, Batman,..).
There is no absolute good and no absolute evil.
So Oldboy is a B-movie enjoyed by couch potatoes who have badass fantasies.
