So I watched Oldboy a couple of months ago and was completely blown away by it, I didn't realize till later that it was part of a trilogy. I'd like to go back and watch the other two, along with Oldboy again, (as it seems like the type of a film that improves upon repeat viewings) but am not sure which to start with, or if it makes any difference at all for that matter. From someone who's watched all three, where's the best place to start?
shareThey have no plot connection, they're only thematically connected. However, I still think that watching them in the order they were made makes the most sense, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, and then Lady Vengeance. However, the key being to watch Lady Vengeance last, so starting with Oldboy isn't a problem. This is mostly for tiny things like a few references and various actors from the first two that show up in Lady Vengeance, and Lady Vengeance has an ending that just seems more appropriate to end the entire thing on.

The order that they were released in! Even though theres no real connection, theres a lot of cameos, plus, if you end the trilogy on any film other than Lady, there isnt much closure. ESPECIALLY if u watch Mr Vengeance last. lol that ending would probably suck for the last scene in the trilogy. I still think Lady puts the whole violence in a unique perspective and the ending is emotionally satisfying.

Thanks! Yeah I finished the trilogy about a month ago and would say I definitely agree. Although I don't really think it matters much which order you watch Mr. Vengeance and Oldboy, Lady definitely provided a perfect ending for the trilogy, both thematically and emotionally

Because the story in each movie is independent of others, I don't think the order really matters. I think Oldboy is a good introduction to the trilogy though.

in release order. the stories have no connections except for being anti-revenge, but the intensity is different. mr vengeance is pretty intense, oldboy even more so and lady vengeance being the most mellow out of the three, making for a perfect fade out. actually if you watch the director intended versions, the trilogy starts in black and white, turns into colour and at the the end fades back to black and white.
