My thoughts (spoilers herein)

This movie told the story of an author who is targeted by a stranger who accuses him of plagiarism, and who will stop at nothing to force him to re-publish the copied story, except with a different ending. The author disputes the accusation, and the rest of the film shows us the tension that emerges as a result. Meanwhile, the author is in the process of divorcing his wife. She has taken on a new lover, and circumstances force them all to occupy time and space together as they square things away. Over the course of the movie, the crazed stranger draws the ex-wife and her lover into the drama by targeting them. The reveal of the film eventually comes about when it is discovered that the author and the crazed man are one in the same; he had been committing heinous acts in the persona of this stranger the entire time. I did not see this twist coming, but it wasn't terribly surprising when it did happen. The aftermath is that he ends up killing the ex wife and lover and burying them in the garden outside the lakehouse. Overall, the movie was somewhat suspenseful but was missing some added depth to the storyline. Johnny Depp played the main character to be somewhat odd, but not terribly likeable, and also not terribly ferocious. It was well done but is missing something as a thriller.

I saw this in theaters and felt underwhelmed by it. The ending was a little predictable due to the popularity of twist ending movies at the time (like Identity).

I don't know, it was well shot and the cast was good. I didn't dig it.

Your summary is quite accurate, I think.

I saw it when it came out and rewatched it just last week, 18 years later, without remembering what it was really about. The movie being based on a short story, I wasn't expecting something grandiose. But it was decent enough and I had a good time watching it.
