You never really saw Mort's teeth , so why was he in dental braces at the end of the movie? Does that have something to do with Shooter, or eating the corn?

What made the sheriff suspect him? And past that, what made the sheriff be so positive? Mort lived upstate from Amy, no one suspected him of the arson, so just because Amy and Ted disappeared doesn't necessarily mean murder, or that Mort was involved. Yet he was being shunned in the store.

I never read the book, so does someone know if the book explains how all the carvings disappeared? Or was just in Mort's mind?

Also, remember when the NY guy interviewed Ted Greenleaf, who changed his story and denied even being by the lake? I finally got the feeling that Shooter showed up and threatened Ted.

Regarding the braces, he made an ironic comment about "straightening some things out." Along those lines, he was looking better, and all I could think was that the acts he committed finally helped resolve his depression and anger -- at least momentarily -- and he was getting himself together (showered, rested, etc.)

I don't know about the suspicious sheriff and his initial interest in speaking to Mort, but maybe people in town (like Greenleaf) were feeling uncomfortable around Mort. Then the wife and her lover are reported missing and Mort's personality appears to improve -- maybe the sheriff put two and two together and realized he had killed them.

Back to the braces -- I wouldn't think you could eat corn on the cob with braces.

people already suspected his actions from the beginning. remember, the sheriff wasn't interested in Mort's report when the dog was killed. then when Mort when to the post office, you hear the woman say "i saw what you did" either he was paranoid or there were witnesses. people all looked at him almost suspecting him of doing something wrong when he came to the store to meet the detective and Tom.

as for the braces, no, dentists do not recommend eating corn off the cob like that as it can pull the metal off the teeth

I can't see that people suspected him from the beginning. They knew him as a writer, and that doesn't just jump to killing his own dog. The cleaning woman seemed to like him. The local eatery just seemed indifferent (probably because he wasn't a local). The post office woman flirted with him. And straightening "things" out doesn't mean you slam yourself into orthodontics. Unless he chewed off all the scratches and then had to get braces! OMG, I solved it! 😁

I just watched this and as for the braces he got kicked in the face while trying to murder his wife i assume his teeth got messed up then.

I think he got the idea for braces from the girl he was hitting on in the store. (she had braces) I don't believe he needed them, but he was a weird fella.

The sheriff suspected him because people were dying or disappearing all around him, and there weren't any other suspects.

The carvings were probably just in his mind. He was imagining a lot of things, why not the carvings.

What made the sheriff suspect him?

Multiple deaths and disappearances in the area.

When Mort first came to the sheriff about his dog, nothing had happened yet. By the end of the movie, the old local guy, the bodyguard, Ted, and Mort's wife had all died/disappeared. The sheriff had seen Mort go from pestering him about looking into the case, to strangely avoiding him.

Mort is probably the most questionable character in that small town. When things start happening, he is easily the prime suspect. Random people from the town are dying, Mort's aquaintances from out of town are dying, and Mort is acting weird? Yeah I would be investigating him heavily.
