Really, Rita? Sorry, but from the terrible photo-shoot concepts to the mediocre photos to the vague, non-critical judging, this show most certainly IS a joke.
Honestly, I kind of feel like we as the audience are being trolled by Tyra Banks. I know that many people, myself included, were very critical of the recent seasons, especially since the social media aspect was introduced. Every cycle became more and more gimmicky. The judges were insufferably self-obsessed. After the men were added, it ceased even pretending to be about models and was instead a televised mating ritual. When I first heard that the show was coming back with new judges on a new network, I was excited. I had high hopes that the show would go back to the fun, creative photo shoots and constructive, critical judging. Unfortunately that is not what happened. The judges are awful. They never give constructive critiques. Some of the photos they rave about are just terrible. And the girls are, for the most part, insufferable. At least with the previous cycles I could laugh about how ridiculous it was. But this version is just so mediocre it goes past laughable and straight to bad.
Now you mention it, I agree about the critiquing at judging.
It seems almost a contrast as it seems like they're trying to re-invent ANTM as high fashion with the calibre of the contestants, opening theme, and certains tasks. But I too wondered recently how previous judges would've reacted to these girls on set and their weekly photos. I personally could imagine Kelly would've torn Courtney a new one for the complaining more so than Drew.
Does anyone else get the impression there could be some changes for Cycle 24? I don't know why but I could see perhaps Ashley becoming the host or Tyra coming back. I'm probably way off, and I don't know how the ratings have fared, but I could imagine that grabbing attention from the audience, particularly if Tyra returned, and Ashley also seems quite popular.
Like I say, I could be completely wrong, but from what I've seen of her as a judge on The X Factor UK and The Voice UK she's only stayed for one season.
The no-neck thing is driving me crazy. I also hate that half of the photos show the girls with their eyes almost closed. I don't know if it's them trying the be sexy or 'smize' (can't believe I just used a Tyra-ism in a non-joking way...) but I just want them to open their damn eyes! I've also noticed quite a few pictures where the models have posed in a way that make them look short. I really do wonder what previous judging panels would have to say about these girls.
I agree. I was excited when I heard they were rebooting the show and I had high hopes that it was going to get back to how it used to be. I used to love watching ANTM, but ever since they brought Kelly Cutrone, or whatever her name is, onto the show I couldn't bare to watch it. She was awful and a complete joke. How someone like her was able to judge fashion was beyond me. Then when they added the public voting and men to the mix it got even worse. I thought there was no way this season could be worse. I might have been wrong lol. It's not even about modelling anymore. They don't even get signed to an agency if they win. All they get is a spread in a magazine and a one year talent contract with VH1. What does that even mean? This show has definitely become a joke. The photoshoots are crap. All they are looking for is the next biggest social media star. The show has nothing to do with modelling anymore and has everything to do with getting more Instagram and snap chat followers. It's a shame because some of the models really have potential...
Really? I'm sort of the opposite. This isn't as good as the better years of ANTM, but it's better than its worse ones. Sort of bottom mediocre but better than the atrocious last few seasons.
Seriously, the last few seasons with the men were awful. Leaving aside that it was just one big frat party, everything was so cheap. The shameless plug of products, the photos were awful, the clothes, the prizes etc looked really amateur and they couldn't even get any fashion related brand to make a guest appearance.
(Though the cheapest of them all was likely the movie they did with Marvin\Jordan\Corey in that cycle finale)
This season isn't that great, but at least it doesn't look as cheap as the last ones.
I'm not a huge fan of the new judges. I like Ashley, I think it's great that if they want to push for more plus size girls then they should actually give full figure models not to mention if you're asking them to go nude, it's good that they show that the judges do that as well. You know, the whole walk the walk not just talk the talk thing.
Other than her? I don't really feel any of the rest of them. They don't talk much about the industry like previous better judges have and their critiques don't seem consistent or insightful really.
But overall, I'm slightly more fond of the show now. I mean heck, I loved it when Stacy Mckenzie showed up and talked about her past. Made her far more compelling than her time on Canada's Next Top Model.
I totally agree that the last few cycles were absolutely atrocious. I guess my biggest problem is with the judges. I don't feel like any of them (especially Rita Ora) have anything remotely constructive to say and based on some of their comments (I refuse to call them critiques, as there is nothing critical there. It's all vague fangirl squawking.) I don't trust their judgement at all.
I got so sick of Tyra and the caricature she molded throughout the course of this show, and Kelly Cutrone was a miserable, grumpy, frumpy Scrooge. But at least they provided specific feedback to the contestants. Again, I couldn't stand the shenanigans that the last few cycles devolved into, and this new reboot seems like it's purged some of those things from the format of the show, but for some reason I'm just not into it.
I also think I would be having more fun with this new season if there were a couple of interesting girls to root for. At this point, all of the girls getting notable screen time are obnoxious and insufferable.
ya, I hated Cutrone....they need to get somebody willing to be tough, but in a humorous way...like Janice did in the earlier seasons. Kelly just came off as miserable and hateful...that woman doesnt have an ounce of humor in her body.
As far as the new aesthetic of the show..I feel like its a step up from where it had gone in the last few seasons but is still lacking in authenticity. I think youre right that it comes with the lack of likeable judges. After 6 episodes I'm still not feeling any of them other than Ashley..(she has that down to earth vibe that Tyra radiated)
A few weeks ago I actually started watching Australia's Next Top Model, (you can find it on the web if you know where to look.) I binge-watched all 10 seasons of Australia's Next Top model and finally got done last night. (Was surprised when Tyra made an appearance in the season 9 finale as a special guest judge).
I must say, I actually like Australia's Next Top Model way more than America's Next Top Model. It's not perfect by any means, and there most certainly are things that can be improved on, but I recommend you guys give Australia's Next Top Model a try and see if you like it. Like I said, for me, in many ways Australia's Next Top Model is better than America's Next Top Model. (I'm just miffed about season 10, because it seemed completely rigged to me. But that was so far the only season that felt that way to me. With America's Next Top Model there were a lot of seasons that felt rigged to me.)
I've also tried Asia's Next Top Model as well as Britain's Next Top Model, and I don't like either of them, at all. Here are the reasons why I don't like them:
-Asia's Next Top Model- There is absolutely no passion/drive/energy/emotion/enthusiasm/"fire" from anyone. Not from the judges. Not from the host. Not from the photographers. Not from the contestants. Nothing. It's like Top Model: Zombie Edition. It makes the show painfully dull to watch. As in you WILL fall asleep watching this dull mess. And the photographer they have on the panel, oh my WORD, he has the most monotonous way of speaking in the universe. It sounds like a robot. That's how he sounds when he speaks. I really don't understand how this version of the show hasn't been canceled yet. I guess if you're a stoner you'll enjoy this version of the show, but that's pretty much it.
-Britain's Next Top Model- HOLY CRAP!! The production values on this version of the show are so bad it's not even funny. Watching this version of the show makes me think they only have a budget of $2. That's how bad the quality of this show is. And the camera work. Sweet jeebus, the camera work is sheer garbage. It's like the crew who work on this show are a bunch of students who have only just recently started doing this sort of thing. Even the audio just sounds "cheap" and low-budgety. To make matters worse they do this thing on this version of the show where the judges actually narrate what's going on as you watch each episode. The narration just gets really annoying really fast. Trust me, avoid this version of the show at all costs. You will regret even trying to watch it. It's that bad.
If you guys are still interested in Top Model then I highly recommend giving the Australian version of the show a try. It is, in my opinion, arguably the best version of the show. Especially with the changes they made from season 9 and up. It's carved out a pretty good name for itself, and I can't wait for season 11, which starts I think sometime mid 2017. (Oh and don't worry, most of the Australian accents on the show aren't too thick, so you shouldn't have any problems understanding what is being said most of the time.)
Oh yeah, Australia's Next Top Model is the highest echelon of the NTM possible. It feels to me like what I always wanted ANTM to be like: super high-quality photo shoots, great prizes, amazing guest judges as well as normal ones, and the girls are not only FAR more talented but far more professional and easier to root for.
I remember when Tyra came to announce the winner Cycle 9 I think and even she admitted that the Australian girls where a head and shoulders above the girls in America.
I don't think Cycle 10 was rigged, I think it was just REALLY obvious who was going to win from the get-go and it didn't even feel like much of a competition because she was one of those insanely natural talents who just "had" it. Regardless, I still thought Cycle 10 was one of the best in terms of the overall quality of the girls, they were all SO SERIOUSLY TALENTED.
I can't wait for next Cycle of AusNTM, I don't even know if it's possible to have a better crop of girls than they had last year.
I had to laugh out loud at that. Maybe Tyra could have gotten away with that cycles 1-3 when it was new and she was legit trying to find a model (for the most part). I think most viewers are well aware the show is a joke. Even a casual viewer knows in 13 years the show has done nada to find a "top model" but people get enjoyment out of the photoshoots and/or the drama. Doesn't mean anyone ever takes it serious. There's no need to act serious, Rita. We all get it.
But I do agree that after skipping a couple cycles because of declining quality, I was excited about a reboot. I think some thing have been okay but yeah none of the judges seem very qualified. Just "I like this" and variations.
- Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.
