Was this film's ending inspired by American Beauty (1999)?

The scene in the end when Wendy shoots David, he falls to the ground and lies in a similar way as Kevin Spacey's character in American Beauty did. Most importantly, the voice over is a big hint as David says "I guess I should be disappointed with the way things turned out. But what are you gonna do?".

In American Beauty the voice over goes "I guess I could be pretty pissed
off about what happened to me, but it's hard to stay mad, when there's so much beauty in the world."

I think it was inspired by Wild Things which also had Matt Dillon, lesbian/bisexual scenes, a whole bunch of double crossing twists and turns, and some flashbacks towards the end or with the credits to show what really happened. This movie does seem to go after a comedic/satirical outlook but the writers must have have been confused as to what to do with it and simply put twists which does not make sense within its context.
