Like a fool I watched this twice! Jokes on me.

I was watching a movie yesterday and for some reason a memory was triggered in my mind about some strange movie with Frank Langella where he goes to a couples house and proposes something to them. That was the only thing I recalled. I thought to myself, hey why didnt I keep that movie? I look it up and after seeing the description, I remembered more...the whole thing with the box. I thought, yeah this looks intriguing and got the movie again. Welp I tried to watch it just now and could not finish it, it was so bad. I did keep jumping forward after I had had enough just to remember more crap but I didn't even bother to reach the end to see how it ended.

The movie has very nice production value so it could have been something but it's just a huge pile of crap and like a moron, they got me to watch it twice! HAHA Jokes on me!

Like a very bad episode of The Twilight Zone with a bit of David Lynch thrown in. Reminds me of another crappy movie of these types that came recently, The Signal.

If you haven't seen it, do not waste your time with this. You will be interested for a while but in the end you want your 115 minutes back!

Didn't like this movie first time.

Second time, I paid more attention and realized there was a lot going on that I hadn't noticed before.

If you skip around, there's no way you will appreciate the complexity of the movie. The studio already cut too much footage out for the movie to make total sense, so if you skip anything more of course the movie just dissolves into a meaningless jumble of weird scenes.

It's actually a lot better than 90 percent of the Twilight Zone episodes that I've seen.

It's worth seeing just for the fact that the writer-director's dad really did work at NASA and designed stuff for the Mars probe's optics. That whole elements of the movie is pretty well researched and would have been much more mind-blowing if the studio hadn't cut four minutes out of the film.

I didn't skip around while I was trying to watch it. I only skipped forward when I already new I was done with this pile of garbage.

reply

This movie is not a pile of garbage. There are many subtleties that need to be picked up on, not sure why you thought this film sucked. Was the ending confusing or something? The whole human species being tested by superior beings to find out if we are worthy of living on earth was great concept.

reply

if you read a bit though this board, you will find like 40 significant flaws in the way this concept is used in the film.

examples:
- the aliens do this to humans to test their morals, but by doing so the aliens are so immoral i.e. hypocrites, that they are not in the moral position to judge to begin with
- they manipulate the situation to make the button even tempting to begin with, ergo it is not a moral decision
- they don't explain the rules properly, ergo the test is redundant
- they don't accept remorse, ergo the test is redundant
- if the decision is final, the whole second act is just filler material
- the water cube dream sequence: makes no sense.

etc etc etc.

reply

Yeah after seeing the movie like 3 times I feel like I mostly understand it, but the water cube dream sequence is just thrown in bizarre bullcrap that only the director might get, I'll never understand that part

reply

Lol I did the same thing

reply

Lol I did the same thing. I didn't like it the first time and a couple years later it popped into my head but all I could really remember from it was about the box and having to choose 1million or someone dying. I was wondering why I disliked it so much so I watched it again. Smh

"Like a very bad episode of The Twilight Zone with a bit of David Lynch thrown in"

ironically, after being a short story called "button button", this became a twilight zone episode, before richard kelly ruined it many years later.
